Sazón de Washington: Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen

“Homey” is the word some Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen customers use to describe the restaurant in Seattle U-District and across Lake Washington in Bellevue. Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen specializes in the cornbread sandwich which is filled with various ingredients, such as beans, cheeses, and meats. Arepas are a national symbol of Venezuela and a staple of the country's diet. The Venezuelan restaurant opened in Seattle’s U-District in 2016.  In 2022, Isamary (Isa) Herrera and her husband, Ulises Andrade, bought Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen from Felix Valderrama, their friend and daughter's godfather. A year later, the co-owners opened the Bellevue location. Customers can choose from various dishes, desserts, and 17 arepas, all with traditional Venezuelan roots.  “Arepa is really symbolic because it’s our identity. Where you find arepa, you find a Venezuelan person,” Herrera said.  Born and raised in Merida, Venezuela, Herrera moved to Seattle in 2001. She learned how to make arepas [...]

New Law Will Likely Harm Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence

A tragic death sparked national attention, turning into a call to strengthen immigration enforcement to enhance public safety. In response, the Laken Riley Act emerged as a significant piece of legislation in the ongoing debate over immigration policy in the United States. It purports to provide protection from crime but, in fact, could have an especially negative impact on survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The new law allows for the detention of individuals who lack legal status, even if they have only been arrested or charged with minor offenses like theft or burglary. Notably, conviction is not required. This blatantly undermines the fundamental principle of "innocent until proven guilty," eroding due process protections that keep innocent people from being incarcerated, separated from children and family, losing employment, and suffering mental and physical health consequences. Mandating that the Secretary of Homeland Security take into custody any undocumented individual who is charged with a [...]

Christian Nationalism at the Nexus of Latinos’ Shifting Religious and Political Preferences

A new study by the Public Religion Research Institute shows that while support for Christian nationalism in the United States remained relatively steady between 2022 and 2024, Hispanic Protestants were the only group with a dramatic increase in support. Christian nationalism in this study was defined by support for a number of statements, such as “The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation.” Hispanic Protestants, by and large, are part of Evangelical and Pentecostal movements in the United States, and now a majority (55%) of Hispanic Protestants support Christian nationalism, up 12% since 2022. This reflects both international religious trends and distinctive national trends in the United States. If there is an overarching story about Latino/as’ politics in 2025, it is that they are a rapidly changing and conflicted electorate. Religious affiliation and country of origin are strongly correlated with Latinos’ political preferences across a diverse political spectrum. For instance, only 25% [...]
