{"id":5061886,"date":"2024-11-04T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-04T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wilatinonews.com\/?p=5061886"},"modified":"2024-11-04T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T08:00:00","slug":"wisconsin-latino-voters-worry-about-the-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/wiln\/2024\/11\/04\/wisconsin-latino-voters-worry-about-the-economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Latino Voters Worry About The Economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time since turning 18, Jaret Garcia will vote for a different party in November&#8217;s presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce you are working and financially supporting yourself, you look at things differently, too,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cI think a lot of people my age are on the same boat of just trying to make the best decision for the future and changing parties not based solely on their beliefs but more on what is best for the country and the future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 27-year-old moved to Delavan, Wis., from the Chicagoland area as a child as her parents pursued their dream of opening a business. Garcia\u2019s parents, originally from Mexico, own multiple storefronts in Wisconsin and have helped transform downtown Delavan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMore opportunity. This is a smaller town,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were the second [Hispanic] business [in downtown Delavan], and slowly it started growing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garcia, a real estate agent, said being self-employed impacted her vote in the election. She believes one party contributed more to small businesses, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. Her fiance is also self-employed and owns a cleaning company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Garcia said her and her fiance\u2019s business took a hit once concerns over the economy&#8217;s state increased. Garcia, who has a primarily Hispanic clientele, said she saw people\u2019s ability to purchase a home being impacted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/unidosus.org\/press-releases\/ahead-of-wisconsin-primaries-cost-of-living-wages-and-healthcare-costs-top-concerns-for-latino-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UnidosUS\u2019s Hispanic Electorate Voter Hub<\/a>, the economy, the rising cost of living, wages, and inflation are among the top five concerns for Hispanic voters nationwide, along with healthcare costs and housing affordability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hispanicfederation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Hispanic-Federation-BG-Latino-Survey-Results-by-States.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> poll <\/a>of Latino voters across battleground states conducted by the Hispanic Federation and the Latino Victory Foundation found that out of the 200 surveyed eligible Latino voters in Wisconsin, 64 said the \u201ccost of living and inflation\u201d was the most important issue facing the United States, with 28 citing \u201cjobs and the economy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poll, conducted from Oct. 2 through Oct. 10, reported that 29 people said \u201chousing costs and affordability\u201d are front of mind, another issue Garcia said personally affects many in her community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hilario Deleon, 23, said the economy is one of the most important domestic issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deleon, the chairman of the Republican Party of Milwaukee County, will be voting for former President Donald J. Trump.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, everything is so expensive,\u201d Deleon said. \u201cGas is still high, grocery prices continue to rise. Inflation has not gone down\u2026rent is extremely high. People have to work more than two jobs to put food on the table.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While canvassing, Deleon said he\u2019s spoken with many Latinos who cite the economy as their top concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are aligning with these issues and that is why we are seeing a major increase of support for President Trump,\u201d Deleon said. \u201cThese people feel like they are being left behind.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deleon said he believes inflation and prices will continue to rise if Vice President Kamala Harris wins.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Sept. 16 through Sept. 23 nationwide <a href=\"https:\/\/nbcuniversalnewsgroup.com\/telemundo\/2024\/09\/29\/nbc-news-telemundo-cnbc-latino-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> of 1,000 registered Latino voters conducted by NBC, CNBC, and Telemundo as part of Telemundo\u2019s \u201cDecision 2024\u201d initiative, Latino voters favor Harris with a 14-point lead over Trump, a smaller lead from previous election years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the poll, Democrats had a 38-point lead in 2016, followed by a 33-point lead in 2020. The poll shows Trump leading on issues such as the economy by 4 points, inflation by 9 points, and border and immigration concerns by 13 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poll also showed that Trump led among male voters under 50 by 9 points and men without four-year degrees by 13 points. He also led among Catholic Hispanics by 20 points, while Harris had the Hispanic Protestant vote by 26 points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The poll also revealed an increase in Latinos identifying with the Republican party, which has jumped from 21% in 2012 to 37% for this upcoming election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, according to an article published by the Wisconsin Examiner, a <a href=\"https:\/\/wisconsinexaminer.com\/2024\/10\/22\/poll-of-latino-voters-finds-growing-support-for-harris-trump-tours-n-c-storm-damage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poll<\/a> conducted from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 by Voto Latino, a civic engagement group, found that in battleground states, Harris continues to gain support, with 64% of the Latino vote compared to Trump\u2019s 31%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Wisconsin, as reported by the Hispanic Federation\u2019s poll, out of the 200 Latino voters surveyed, 54 planned to vote for Harris and 31 for Trump, with the remaining being undecided or casting a vote for a Green party or independent candidate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same poll found that only 69 people reported that they were \u201calmost certain\u201d they would vote: 16 people said they \u201cprobably will vote,\u201d and 12 reported the \u201cchances are 50-50.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samantha Jimenez, director of engagement with the Latino Chamber of Commerce in Milwaukee, said many Hispanic business owners decide not to get involved in politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe most I have gotten was \u2018I don&#8217;t\u2019 really care anymore,\u2019 others have been saying it doesn\u2019t matter either way,\u201d Jimenez said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jimenez said the Chamber has asked owners if the election has impacted their business to point them to proper resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about supporting either party with this, but how is this going to help you out as a business owner,\u201d Jimenez said. \u201cWe are nonpartisan. We don\u2019t support either party.
