{"id":5061384,"date":"2023-02-07T05:46:20","date_gmt":"2023-02-07T05:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wilatinonews.com\/?p=5061384"},"modified":"2023-02-07T05:46:20","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T05:46:20","slug":"wecs-spindell-tours-low-voter-turnout-reveals-republican-suppression-strategies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/wiln\/2023\/02\/07\/wecs-spindell-tours-low-voter-turnout-reveals-republican-suppression-strategies\/","title":{"rendered":"WEC\u2019s Spindell touts low voter turnout, reveals Republican suppression strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats and voting rights advocates are calling for Robert Spindell, member of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, to resign after celebrating low voter turnout among marginalized communities in the 2022 elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026We can be especially proud of the City of Milwaukee (80.2% Dem Vote) casting 37,000 less votes than cast in the 2018 election with the major reduction happening in the overwhelming Black and Hispanic areas,\u201d Spindell wrote in an email to fellow Republicans that was shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/urbanmilwaukee.com\/2023\/01\/10\/murphys-law-gop-leader-thrilled-to-suppress-city-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urban Milwaukee<\/a> on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spindell, who served as a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-robert-frost-af3f66cb52b890da226431ff58e8f2f2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fake elector<\/a> for former President Donald Trump, is now facing immense backlash from state Democratic leaders and community organizers for his comments. \u201cWe don&#8217;t need election officials bragging about voter suppression, encouraging it enthusiastically as he has done,\u201d Democratic state Senator Kelda Roys told WI Latino News. \u201cHe needs to resign or Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, who appointed him, needs to remove him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spindell is yet to resign or be removed from his post, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pbswisconsin.org\/news-item\/here-now-highlights-robert-spindell-brian-michel-daniel-kelly\/#:~:text=%22Really%2C%20the%20thing,into%20their%20programs.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denies<\/a> that he was celebrating voter suppression in his email. Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of <a href=\"https:\/\/vdlf.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Voces De La Frontera<\/a> in Milwaukee, is unconvinced.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s proud that voter suppression efforts are working to limit the voting rights of Latinos and other people of color,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Neumann-Ortiz, Spindell\u2019s lauding of voter disenfranchisement represents a pattern of behaviors and beliefs of Wisconsin\u2019s Republicans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere in Wisconsin, the Republican Party has really been dominated by the interests of big business,\u201d Neumann-Ortiz said. \u201cTo hold power, they were part of supporting the architecture of one of the most gerrymandered states in the country.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wisconsin is victim to some of the most \u201cextreme partisan gerrymanders in the United States,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gerrymander.princeton.edu\/reforms\/WI#:~:text=Wisconsin%20is%20home,partisan%20gerrymandering%20claims.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Princeton University\u2019s gerrymandering project<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans control nearly two-thirds of the state\u2019s legislative seats, despite a strong Democratic presence. Voters reelected Democrat Gov. Tony Evers in 2022, beating his Republican challenger 51 percent to 48 percent. In eight of the last nine presidential elections, the Democratic candidate won the statewide vote in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf one party was winning the majority of the statewide vote, you would think that they would be represented about the same in the state house,\u201d said Sam Liebert, Wisconsin State Director of All Voting is Local.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liebert says the gerrymandering that plagues Wisconsin disenfranchises the state\u2019s marginalized voters the most.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s called \u2018cracking and packing,\u201d Liebert said. \u201cYou have a lot of brown and Black people who are in districts that are 80 percent plus Democratic. But then, most of the Republican districts are 53, 54, 55 percent.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Republicans controlling the gerrymandered legislature, Roys says that lawmakers snowball their suppression efforts to retain power by making it more difficult for voters to cast their ballots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the last 12 years\u2026 the gerrymandered Republican legislature has worked systematically to limit access to early voting and absentee voting by implementing voter ID laws,\u201d Roys said. \u201cWe know in Wisconsin that people in urban areas are much less likely to have driver\u2019s licenses, and that\u2019s the primary ID that people need to vote.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wisconsin\u2019s voter ID law, which was passed in 2011 under former Republican Gov. Scott Walker, is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/observatory.journalism.wisc.edu\/2016\/11\/01\/wisconsins-voter-id-controversy-what-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strictest<\/a> in the country. It\u2019s widely credited as the reason the state\u2019s voter turnout was so low in the 2016 election, particularly among racial minorities in urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the 2022 election, state Sen. LaTonya Johnson said that voting in Wisconsin was even more stringent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ballot drop boxes that were legal during the presidential election were deemed to be illegal for this election,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThen, they made sure that absentee voting was taken down from six weeks to two weeks \u2013 we used to have six weeks to vote absentee.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State Republicans performed well for their efforts in this past election. They achieved a supermajority in the state senate after a net gain of one seat, and fell just short of a supermajority in the state assembly with a net gain of three seats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their success was, at least in part, due to the tactics that made Spindell so proud in his email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Republican strategy has been very apparent for a while now,\u201d Neumann-Ortiz said. \u201cInstead of trying to win Latino and African American voters on policy issues and the issues that they care about, they&#8217;ve used a strategy of both voter suppression and manipulation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roys urges these voters not to be discouraged, but to fight back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBe angry,\u201d Roys said. \u201cUse that anger to organize your friends and neighbors to go vote.
