The caf\u00e9 boasts a diverse selection of Latino-inspired dishes in Providence\u2019s college district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the owner, Milena Pag\u00e1n, a Puerto Rican native, the goal is to provide a taste of the Caribbean in her adopted home. &#8220;What I love about (Puerto Rican cuisine) is that it has three major influences,&#8221; Pag\u00e1n shared during an <a href=\"https:\/\/heyrhody.com\/stories\/milena-pagan-little-sister,95733\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/heyrhody.com\/stories\/milena-pagan-little-sister,95733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview <\/a>with Hey Rhody. &#8220;There&#8217;s the Spanish influence (colonizers), the Taino influence (original inhabitants), and African (enslaved people) influence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"In the Kitchen: Fried Plantains with Dipping Sauce\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7hnr6NpoGbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pag\u00e1n moved to the mainland from her hometown, Caguas, to Boston in order to study chemical engineering at MIT, but decided to take a different career path and opened&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rebelleartisanbagels.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rebelle Artisan Bagels<\/a> in 2016 with her husband, Darcy Coleman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/05\/IMG_3432-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5060970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/05\/IMG_3432-1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/05\/IMG_3432-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/05\/IMG_3432-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Milena Pagan, the owner of Little Sister, right, and her husband Darcy Coleman (Photo Credit: Milena Pagan)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pag\u00e1n returned to the island to reconnect with her roots and get inspiration for putting creative twists and Latino flavor into Little Sister&#8217;s offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI spent thirteen or fourteen years away from the island, and I went back for six weeks. That was the longest I have been there since college,\u201d Pag\u00e1n <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rimonthly.com\/little-sister\/pic\/191175\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.rimonthly.com\/little-sister\/pic\/191175\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <\/a>Rhode Island Monthly. \u201cI had an excuse to go down there and spend a lot of time and study the food and get re-cultured, so I could come back and bring home some of those ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little Sister has been a special hit among the growing Hispanic-Latino community in Providence, which, as of 2020, makes up&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/providencecityrhodeisland\" target=\"_blank\">44 percent<\/a>&nbsp;of the total population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very happy to have a lot of Puerto Ricans coming in here,\u201d Pag\u00e1n said. \u201cHaving a place where they can enjoy a really good plate of food, a place that speaks to them without talking down to them, is really valuable.
