{"id":5060360,"date":"2021-12-02T20:35:41","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T01:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rilatinonews.com\/?p=5060360"},"modified":"2021-12-02T20:35:41","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T01:35:41","slug":"marcela-betancur-prospering-through-hurdles-and-strengths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/2021\/12\/02\/marcela-betancur-prospering-through-hurdles-and-strengths\/","title":{"rendered":"Marcela Betancur: Prospering through hurdles and strengths"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Census Bureau, Hispanics-Latinos make up more than 60-million of the U.S. population, a 23-percent increase from 2010 to 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Rhode Island, the community is180,000+ strong, making up nearly 17-percent of the state\u2019s total population; the twelfth highest percentage among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouraged by the Census findings, organizations like the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University are pushing to ensure that Hispanics-Latinos are an integral part of Ocean State\u2019s strategic planning moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarceB_ri\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MarceB_ri\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcela Betancur<\/a>, Executive Director of LPI, was a guest on the Latino News Network podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3ryH9a4zA14lJGACH4Pjcp?si=084bd8158b8047e6\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3ryH9a4zA14lJGACH4Pjcp?si=084bd8158b8047e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;3 Questions With&#8230;&#8221;<\/a> and shared insights on engaging Hispanics-Latinos beyond Hispanic Heritage Month, ensuring investments focus on gaps in determinants of health, and eliminating barriers to voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: ... She said that her experience shaped her interest in advocacy work, like LPI that dives into policymaking to achieve more significant social, political, and economic equity. &#8220;The community that I grew up in had many hurdles, but also had a lot of strengths &#8211; especially within our immigrant community.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, RI Latino News and the Latino Policy Institute <a href=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/rilatinonews-and-latino-policy-institute-announce-partnership\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/riln\/rilatinonews-and-latino-policy-institute-announce-partnership\/\">announced a partnership<\/a> to best serving the Hispanic-Latino community by giving greater voice and visibility to perspectives that aren\u2019t typically heard or seen in mainstream media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Latino Policy Institute at Roger
