{"id":5058821,"date":"2023-04-14T08:22:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T08:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malatinonews.com\/?p=5058821"},"modified":"2023-04-14T08:22:00","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T08:22:00","slug":"at-yelys-patrons-get-a-taste-of-their-dominican-republic-homeland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/2023\/04\/14\/at-yelys-patrons-get-a-taste-of-their-dominican-republic-homeland\/","title":{"rendered":"Saz\u00f3n\u00a0De MA: Yely\u2019s Restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JAMAICA PLAIN\u2014It was a busy day in Yely\u2019s Restaurant.&nbsp;The lunch rush had just started and the long line of customers was growing fast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers shook off the rain from their umbrellas and peered over the foggy glass, lifting a finger to point at the food selection available that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edwin Anderson Medina, the 45-year-old owner, worked the register, moving seamlessly around his coworkers as he collected payment from customers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the long line, Medina paused to greet and shake hands with longtime patrons and friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGetting a taste of our food no matter who you are or where you\u2019re from is the most important thing for me,\u201d said Medina in an interview after the lunch rush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yely\u2019s Coffee Shop\u2014a Dominican eatery commonly known as Yely\u2019s Restaurant\u2014is a staple in Jamaica Plain, offering home-cooked Dominican food and an authentic feel of the homeland.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen prepares food from its 6 a.m. opening to its 9 p.m. closing. Located one block from the Jackson Square station on the Orange Line, the restaurant is a huge draw for commuters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The family-owned restaurant first opened in 1995 by Medina\u2019s father, Juan, who specialized in street-style Dominican cuisine, known as <em>fritura<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to its popularity, Yely\u2019s has expanded with another restaurant in Dorchester, where about 24 percent of the Dominican population in the Greater Boston area lives, according to the Boston Planning and Development Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medina, originally from Bani, Dominican Republic, came to the United States in 1989 and grew to love cooking and running a restaurant as he worked alongside his father.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was the profession I enjoyed the most,\u201d he said. \u201cBeing taught by my father and my family growing up definitely influenced it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medina is running the Dorchester location while his father remains the owner of the original Jamaica Plain location. The food and prices remain the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBeing able to grow the business has always been something I\u2019ve wanted to do since we started,\u2019\u2019 Medina shared. \u201cNow that I\u2019ve expanded it feels amazing being able to show others my culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medina said the restaurant has become a large part of his life\u2014he hopes it will continue and grow with the next generation of his family.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d love to see more Yely\u2019s pop up around the city so everyone can enjoy,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medina smiled warmly at his customers as he rang them up during the lunch rush. When he saw someone he knew, he moved from behind the counter to greet them. It\u2019s the kind of service his customers expect, he said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a legacy for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI see this and I know that my children [and] grandchildren \u2026 have this to keep going.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This story was published as part of a collaboration between MA Latino News and Boston University\u2019s Department of Journalism in the College of Communication.
