Danna is a Communications graduate from Frederick Community College and a Journalism student at the University of Maryland. Danna has experience as a news reporter for &#8220;The Commuter,&#8221; a student-run newspaper, and as a producer for &#8220;Discovering your Future,\u201d a podcast that helps students to find their passion. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/search\/3711+Campus+Drive+%0D%0A+College+Park,+MD+20740?entry=gmail&amp;source=g\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I believe the more we know about different cultures, ethnicities, and races, the more tolerant and less judgmental we will be,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5058614\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image.png 400w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 170px) 100vw, 170px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giana Aguilar-Valencia is a junior at the University of Central Florida. Giana grew up in a Colombian-Immigrant household. She is a first-generation American and first-generation college student. &#8220;Navigating both the American lifestyle and educational processes has been a handful,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Speaking Spanish at home and English everywhere else felt like a built culture shock. Although I am grateful to have learned my beautiful language and grew up very attached to my culture, I find myself unique from those around me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5058615\" width=\"172\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-1.png 200w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-1-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacqueline Cardenas is an undergrad student majoring in journalism with a concentration in Latino Communication at DePaul University. Jacqueline is a first-generation Mexican American who wishes to diversify the news industry. She is the editor-in-chief of the first Spanish-language student newspaper in Chicago\u2014 La DePaulia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This program would allow me to be a part of critical discussions surrounding the harsh realities of being a Latina women reporter and become prepared to face challenges that will help me become a stronger journalist,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5058616\" width=\"168\" height=\"132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-2.png 640w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-2-300x236.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 168px) 100vw, 168px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kiara Coll Ramirez is a graduate of the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/upra.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo (UPRA)<\/a>,&nbsp;and the recipient of the&nbsp;2022&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hzscholarship.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hortencia Zavala Foundation Scholarship<\/a>. Coll was also president of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Hispanic Journalists<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nahj_upra?lang=bn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student Chapter<\/a>&nbsp;at UPRA. She plans to attend graduate school. \u201cI am a proud Latina puertorrique\u00f1a searching for new opportunities and experiences to keep growing,\u201d Coll wrote in her scholarship application. She said she never saw herself as a leader, but with the help of her colleagues worked hard to become one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5058617\" width=\"185\" height=\"124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-3.png 640w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nadia Carolina Hernandez is a junior at DePaul University studying journalism. Nadia is the print managing editor&nbsp;of The DePaulia and president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists &#8211; DePaul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My passion is reporting about marginalized communities and diversifying newsrooms and their coverage,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This city (Chicago) and its Latino community are unique. I will engage in this Bootcamp with curiosity and grit.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FREE virtual workshop is led by award-winning news media veteran and twice president of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hugobalta\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo Balta<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the program, all of the stories produced by the fellows were published on one or all of the Latino News Network news outlets. Balta is the owner and publisher of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/latino-news-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Latino News Network<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is imperative that students get real work experiences and mentoring to navigate a newsroom that more often than not is not diverse and inclusive,\u201d said Balta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to a lack of equitable representation in newsrooms, there is an urgent need to&nbsp;train journalists to be transparent in news&nbsp;gathering&nbsp;and reporting on&nbsp;the complexity of racial identity,&nbsp;social constructs relating to ethnic&nbsp;terms, and cultural competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Covering race, ethnicity, and culture: a guideline for fair and accurate storytelling<\/em>&nbsp;is a course designed to go beyond the inverted pyramid of basic news writing in examining the terminology, usage, and word choice of stories&nbsp;providing greater visibility and understanding of deep-rooted inequities in all aspects of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guest speakers also share insights on networking with a purpose, strategies for managing one\u2019s career, and the experience of often being the only person of color in the newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The weekly class will begin on September 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"631\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5058618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-4.png 640w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2022\/08\/image-4-300x296.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/meet-the-fellows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet The 2021 Fellows<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Publisher&#8217;s Notes:<\/em> Special thanks to the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) for their help in promoting the Journalism Camp.
