{"id":5058548,"date":"2022-06-01T05:03:23","date_gmt":"2022-06-01T05:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malatinonews.com\/?p=5058548"},"modified":"2022-06-01T05:03:23","modified_gmt":"2022-06-01T05:03:23","slug":"latinos-face-greater-challenges-in-ma-than-in-any-other-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/2022\/06\/01\/latinos-face-greater-challenges-in-ma-than-in-any-other-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Latinos Face Greater Challenges In MA than In Any Other State"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In one of the nation\u2019s richest states, many of the more than 800,000 Latinos in Massachusetts are struggling to deal with threats of social and economic hardship and unequal educational opportunities heightened over the past two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019re often facing greater economic challenges here than other Latinos nationally,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonindicators.org\/-\/media\/indicators\/boston-indicators-reports\/report-files\/avancemosya_final050222.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">according to \u00a1Avancemos Ya!,<\/a>\u00a0a new report from The Boston Foundation\u2019s research center Boston Indicators, UMass Boston\u2019s Mauricio Gast\u00f3n Institute and the Latino Equity Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers aimed to deeply understand the historical context to develop effective solutions to inequities now, finding that the demographic was hit hard overall during the pandemic and that there are substantial gaps in the financial status and educational attainment among Latinos of different origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SUGGESTION: Advocating For Systemic Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"3 Questions With\u2026Rosario Ubiera-Minaya\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WG4fcRWrqx8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLatinos have a higher entrepreneurship, education, and labor force participation rates than in years past,\u201d Rosario Ubiera-Minaya, Executive Director of Amplify Latinx said in an interview on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/\">Latino News Network&nbsp;<\/a>podcast,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3ryH9a4zA14lJGACH4Pjcp?si=084bd8158b8047e6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c3 Questions With\u2026\u201d<\/a> this month. \u201cBut it is still a disproportionate share (in the state),\u201d&nbsp;she said referencing the  <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonindicators.org\/-\/media\/indicators\/boston-indicators-reports\/report-files\/avancemosya_final050222.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> \u00a1Avancemos Ya!<\/a> report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 327,000 Puerto Ricans and 150,000 Dominicans make up the largest share of the Bay State\u2019s Latino community at 40 and 19 percent, respectively. Mexicans make up just 6 percent of the state\u2019s population, a significant variation from the national average in the United States, where more than 60 percent of Latinos have Mexican roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WGBH reporter Sarah Betancourt spoke with Dr. Lorna Rivera, director at the&nbsp;Gaston Institute for Latino Community Development &amp; Public Policy and other thought  leaders about the need to pay attention to the over 20 different ethnic groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read <em>New report lays bare the origins of Mass.
