According to CommonWealth Magazine, roughly half of Black and Hispanic, Latino residents (51 percent each) say they have struggled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"709\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/06\/food-insecurity-graphic-768x709-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5050628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/06\/food-insecurity-graphic-768x709-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2020\/06\/food-insecurity-graphic-768x709-1-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the cities and towns in the state&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/boston.cbslocal.com\/2020\/05\/20\/massachusetts-coronavirus-numbers-cases-towns-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hardest hit<\/a>&nbsp;by COVID-19 are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/massinc.org\/our-work\/policy-center\/gateway-cities\/about-the-gateway-cities\/#:~:text=The%20Legislature%20defines%2026%20Gateway,%2C%20Springfield%2C%20Taunton%2C%20Westfield%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gateway Cities<\/a>. These cities already face economic challenges and many have a higher proportion of marginalized residents than Massachusetts overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonindicators.org\/reports\/report-website-pages\/latinos-in-greater-boston#:~:text=Latinos%20In%20Massachusetts,-Today%2C%20there%20are&amp;text=Currently%20Latinos%20are%20concentrated%20in,and%20Lynn%20(36%20percent).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Indicators<\/a>,  the cities and towns with the highest concentrations of&nbsp;Latinos are&nbsp;Boston (20% of the city population), Lawrence (77 percent of the city population), Chelsea (66 percent), Holyoke (50 percent), Springfield (42 percent) and Lynn (36 percent).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The consequences of the coronavirus crisis are heavily concentrated on the same people and groups, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2020\/06\/10\/covid-19-economic-distress-massachusetts-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> WBUR.  Younger people, people of color, renters, part-time and hourly workers, and people with lower income and education levels are already struggling with job losses, wage losses, food insecurity, and housing troubles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among those facing the most economic distress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>30% say someone in their household has had the symptoms, while just 4% of those in less distress say the same.<\/li><li>Asked about confirmed COVID cases, 26% of respondents in most economic distress also say someone in the household has tested positive for the virus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbfb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greater Boston Food bank (GBFB) <\/a>normally ships out around a million pounds of food per week to people in need. Now, the organization\u2019s CEO and president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/local-news\/2020\/06\/08\/catherine-damato-on-rising-food-insecurity-in-mass-and-what-you-can-do-to-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tells<\/a> WGBH, those numbers have grown to nearly 2.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Catherine&nbsp;D\u2019Amato said nearly half of the people relying on food assistance from the GBFB have never used their services before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This is, again, a reflection of the high unemployment and the business closures,\u201d she noted. \u201cThat there is just an increased number of people saying \u2018I\u2019ve never had to do this before, I\u2019m not really sure where to go, is it okay to come?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe answer\u201d to those questions, she said, &#8220;is yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p
