{"id":5051929,"date":"2021-12-30T12:32:21","date_gmt":"2021-12-30T12:32:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malatinonews.com\/?p=5051929"},"modified":"2021-12-30T12:32:21","modified_gmt":"2021-12-30T12:32:21","slug":"5051929-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/2021\/12\/30\/5051929-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Year End Recap: 3 Questions with &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the year comes to a close, the MA Latino News (MALN) team is looking back at a year\u2019s worth of producing content that provides greater visibility and voice of the Hispanic-Latino community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, MALN introduced the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/3ryH9a4zA14lJGACH4Pjcp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c3 Questions With\u2026\u201d (3QW)<\/a>&nbsp;podcast. 3QW is a public affairs program tackling matters most important to Hispanics-Latinos by speaking with community and industry thought leaders on civic engagement, education, employment, health care, and many more topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for listening and sending your ideas on guests and topics for CTLN to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are three of the most popular programs in the podcast\u2019s inaugural year:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In June we spoke with former Chief&nbsp;Celina Barrios-Millner,&nbsp;Director of Equity &amp; Inclusion for the city of Boston&nbsp;talks about&nbsp;closing the wealth gap in Black and Latino communities by&nbsp;embedding equity and racial justice into all City planning and operations.&nbsp;Barrios-Milner has been reassigned as Mayor Michelle Wu&#8217;s Office Senior Advisor to the Mayor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An analysis by the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation in May stated that if Massachusetts could close the wealth gap in Black and Latino communities, the state could grow its economy by $25 billion over five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 3QW interview, Barrios-Millner said she agrees with the study. \u201cEquity is not just a moral imperative; it\u2019s an imperative for our future success\u201d, she said. \u201cPeople of color are faring worse at every level (health, wealth); then your whole economy is going to be dragged down by those disparities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: ...Chief Celina Barrios-Millner, Director of Equity &amp; Inclusion, Boston\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/5HjbZgScyHSwgDmq0yhd6p?si=K0OnEID5Tc2yx3C1ch14RQ&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you have a large community that\u2019s growing but they\u2019re not really prospering, society ends up losing out,\u201d said Evelyn Barahona, in an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.northeastern.edu\/2021\/06\/08\/latino-prosperity-and-equity-are-goals-of-philanthropic-fund-led-by-northeastern-graduate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a>&nbsp;with 3QW soon after being appointed Director of the Latino Equity Fund (LEF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barahona spoke about the advocacy work the LEF&nbsp;is focused on&nbsp;in addressing&nbsp;the longstanding health and economic inequities the Massachusetts&nbsp;Hispanic-Latino community faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWithout help, there is no wealth\u201d, said Barahona remembering how longstanding disparities exacerbated by COVID-19 inspired the advocacy group to \u201cswitch gears\u201d in providing Hispanics-Latinos the tools necessary not only to survive but to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-21-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: ... Evelyn Barahona, Director of the Latino Equity Fund \" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/2xuY1QlzKgAkrSLxYkQfeN?si=_1qNSSxLTQC1MBGrD6CwBw&#038;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September, Mike Festa, State Director of AARP Massachusetts emphasized on \u201c3 Questions With\u2026\u201d \u201cWe are intent on connecting, empowering, and supporting the Hispanic-Latino community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAARP has an appreciation for the need to expand our programming to be more relevant to their needs,\u201d said Festa, about serving the booming 887,000 population of the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the biggest challenges older people have is scam artists who always look to exploit situations like the COVID-19 pandemic, taking advantage of people when they\u2019re most vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A study by the Federal Trade Commission shows that Hispanic-Latino communities report less fraud than others. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/states.aarp.org\/massachusetts\/aarp-massachusetts-fraud-watch-network-update-september-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AARP Fraud Watch Network<\/a>&nbsp;is a
