Diestefano looks to support low-income, first-generation, and students of color and bring awareness to the disadvantages these students face when it comes to education in Chicago. A lifelong Chicagoan, he&nbsp;loves combining sports and storytelling, as well as studying the intersection between sports, race, culture, and politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/C8E31B6B-4074-4C20-B52B-4621A97C840A-779x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5051651\"\/><figcaption>Yamila Martinez, New York<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yamila Martinez enjoys working with the community, especially the immigrant community in America. \u201cI believe that every human has a story of success, failures, learning, and regrets,\u201d she says. \u201cI like to bring out stories to the public and contribute to making our society fairer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/D0E264F0-E9E6-4012-836B-4998F33AC583.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5051653\"\/><figcaption>Stephania Rodriguez, Illinois<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stephania Rodriguez is a Depaul University student majoring in Journalism and minoring in Latinx Media and Communication. \u201cI believe in providing more transparency in news and elevating voices in marginalized communities and telling their stories,\u201d she said. \u201cI hope to inspire women like me who might often feel like an imposter in their field or who might feel, because of their background, they don\u2019t deserve a seat at the table of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/BCB2D27D-6094-43D6-8108-4CA19FC81045.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5051655\"\/><figcaption>Daniela Sandoval, California<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniela Sandoval is an aspiring journalist and storyteller from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. During her undergraduate career at the University of California, Los Angeles, she studied Comparative Literature and Spanish Community &amp; Culture with a minor in Global Studies. In her spare time, she enjoys going to coffee shops, and hanging out with her dog, Bolita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/84AC6CAA-8A98-4008-B8DE-04918C2EF781.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5051656\"\/><figcaption>Boris Q\u2019va, Georgia<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boris Q\u2019va is &nbsp;a young, highly creative, Afro-Cuban Journalist with&nbsp;expertise&nbsp;in Sports, Race &amp; Ethnicity, and Culture. &nbsp;He\u2019s a member of &nbsp;the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) as well of the Society of Professional Journalists. Boris is a graduate from Full Sail University newest programs, \u201cThe Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too often conventional journalism dehumanizes&nbsp;communities of color and other marginalized groups with&nbsp;coverage that&nbsp;is&nbsp;biased, infrequent, and little connection with those groups of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to a lack of diversity and inclusion in newsrooms, there is an urgent need to&nbsp;train journalists to be transparent in news&nbsp;gathering&nbsp;and reporting on&nbsp;the complexity of racial identity,&nbsp;social constructs relating to ethnic&nbsp;terms, and cultural competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Covering race, ethnicity, and culture: a guideline for fair and accurate storytelling<\/em>&nbsp;is a course designed to go beyond the inverted pyramid of basic news writing in examining the terminology, usage, and word choice of stories&nbsp;providing greater visibility and understanding of deep-rooted inequities in all aspects of society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 12-week initiative Fellows will also get mentoring and hands-on experience in producing stories from concept to execution focused on social justice, determinants of health, and community empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guest speakers will also share insights on networking with purpose, strategies in managing one\u2019s career, and the experience of often being the only person of color in the newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nhlatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/EE48FD22-4769-4134-8E6F-79685A5F94C3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5051658\"\/><figcaption>Hugo Balta, Owner\/Publisher, Latino News Network<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The free virtual workshop will be led this Fall by award winning, news media veteran, and twice president of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ)<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hugobalta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugo Balta<\/a>.
