The colorful hydrangeas are the scene stealers in a popular vacation spot known for its beautiful, white-sand beaches and charming shops and eateries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydrangeas are ornamental plants, grown for their large flowerheads that thrive on the Cape because of its moderate maritime climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The first thing we do is tickle the roots&#8221;, said Pamela Vasques, Fine Gardener at Chatham Bars Inn, about taking care of the resort&#8217;s 4,000 bushes. Vasques was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/nurturing-the-magic-of-hydrangeas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">featured<\/a> on CBS Sunday Morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Inn&#8217;s 25 acres of lush and colorful gardens, which include 12 different varieties of hydrangeas is a popular spot for flower fans. \u201cIt\u2019s my retirement job and it\u2019s probably been the best job of my entire life,\u201d Vasques <a href=\"https:\/\/chathamlivingmag.com\/hydrangea-whisperer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Chatham Living. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably China, Korea, and Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydrangea\u00a0is derived from\u00a0Greek\u00a0and means \u2018water vessel\u2019 (<em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hydria\" target=\"_blank\">hydria<\/a><\/em>), in reference to the shape of its seed capsules. The earlier name,\u00a0<em>Hortensia<\/em>, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, honoring French astronomer and mathematician\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nicole-Reine_Lepaute\" target=\"_blank\">Nicole-Reine Hortense Lepaute<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydrangea\u00a0flowers\u00a0are produced from early spring to late autumn; they grow in flowerheads most often at the ends of the stems. Typically the flowerheads contain two types of flowers: small non-showy flowers in the center or interior of the flowerhead, and large, showy flowers with large colorful\u00a0sepals\u00a0(tepals).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hydrangeas are big drinkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water, water, water.\u00a0Always water from the bottom and give it a good soak at dawn and at dusk is one of the recommendations Vasques tells Chatham Living in caring for the plants. \u201cNever, ever let the water touch the leaves because if it doesn\u2019t dry, the sun is going to scorch the leaves and they will turn brown.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re planning to make the New England pilgrimage to see the colors on the Cape, check out t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.capecodchamber.org\/events\/featured-events\/cape-cod-hydrangea-fest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he Cape Cod Hydrangea Festival<\/a>, an annual ten-day festival held in July that provides daily tours of private gardens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They come from near and far to Cape Cod\u2019s visual feast of purples and pinks, blues and whites.
