Jon Santiago joins the growing list of people looking to become the next mayor of Boston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Puerto Rican native is also an emergency room doctor at Boston Medical Center. &#8220;This race is really about electing a mayor who&#8217;s going to not only address the acute crisis that is COVID-19 &#8230; but what I&#8217;m more worried about over the next several years, is what type of Boston bounces back from COVID-19,&#8221; Santiago <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2021\/02\/23\/jon-santiago-run-mayor-boston\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> WBUR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Our Boston Story\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i-YDzpIoVPw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santiago says he has always seen Boston as a place of opportunity using his father as an example. &#8220;We moved initially to Dorchester, then to Roxbury, and my father was able to actually graduate Northeastern while having a full time job during the day,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And he was struggling to get by with subsidized housing, Section 8, and relying on government support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santiago, 38, is the fourth candidate \u2014 and fourth of color, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2021\/02\/23\/metro\/santiago-south-end-lawmaker-launches-bid-boston-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> the Boston Globe \u2014 to declare in a still-malleable field that cracked wide open when President Biden said he would nominate Mayor Martin J. Walsh to be his labor secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think this is about the candidate who can have the most appeal to the most neighborhoods,\u201d Santiago said. \u201cI think we bring that \u2014 a candidate based on hope and making sure equity is at the [forefront].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second-term state representative was first elected to represent the South End and Roxbury in the state legislature in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Santiago is a captain in the U.S. Army Reserves, and served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(Photo Credit: <a
