{"id":5051000,"date":"2021-01-25T16:12:32","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T16:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malatinonews.com\/?p=5051000"},"modified":"2021-01-25T16:12:32","modified_gmt":"2021-01-25T16:12:32","slug":"covid-19-hurts-latino-childrens-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/2021\/01\/25\/covid-19-hurts-latino-childrens-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 Hurts Latino Children\u2019s Mental Health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The COVID-19 pandemic is doing more than exposing the racial, ethnic, and economic disparities existing in our society; it is making them worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pandemic\u2019s impact has left an undeniable mark with long-lasting effects on the Latino community and in particular children. According to a report by Boston-based Latinos for Education, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latinosforeducation.org\/massachusetts-covid-19-impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 22% of students across Massachusetts are Latino.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Being away from his friends, being away from his teachers has been difficult,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcboston.com\/news\/coronavirus\/with-pandemic-impacting-latinx-childrens-mental-health-revere-is-in-focus\/2244440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Lorena Lopera, executive director of Latinos for Education&#8217;s state chapter, of her son, who is in the first grade and learning how to read via Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s easy to look at the hardships that we\u2019ve identified and think that this is mainly happening to the parents,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/newsone.com\/4077598\/black-latino-children-covid-19-hardships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> said<\/a> Dana Thomson, a researcher at Child Trends, who is also a co-author of the report. \u201cBut research shows that the stress that families and parents experience definitely trickles down to their children either indirectly through parent-child interactions or by the types of experiences that they\u2019re able to provide, or directly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 40-percent of Hispanics &#8211; Latinos nationwide reported experiencing frequent symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/covid19\/pulse\/mental-health.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to a study by the National Center for Health Statistics<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anxiety and depression can have physical effects like severe headaches, stomach pains, chills, and difficulty breathing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Latinos for Education survey reveals 43% of Spanish-speaking families indicated that they&#8217;ve witnessed a decline in their children&#8217;s mental health due to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Gaston Institute, \u201cLatinos, who make up 12.3% of Massachusett&#8217;s population, account for 30% of all COVID-19 cases.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The COVID-19 pandemic is doing more than exposing the racial, ethnic, and economic disparities existing in our society;
