{"id":5050623,"date":"2020-06-18T22:47:14","date_gmt":"2020-06-18T22:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/malatinonews.com\/?p=5050623"},"modified":"2020-06-18T22:47:14","modified_gmt":"2020-06-18T22:47:14","slug":"relief-but-uncertainty-after-scotus-blocks-trump-from-ending-daca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/maln\/2020\/06\/18\/relief-but-uncertainty-after-scotus-blocks-trump-from-ending-daca\/","title":{"rendered":"Relief, but uncertainty after SCOTUS blocks Trump from ending DACA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>\u201cOh my goodness, I don\u2019t know what comes next,\u201d said Estefany Pineda, a student at the University of Massachusetts, Boston about the U.S. Supreme Court ruling Thursday that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program (DACA) cannot be shut down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI came to the United States when I was 9 years old,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/news\/2020\/06\/18\/daca-recipients-immigration-advocates-and-mass-politicos-rejoice-scotus-ruling-call-for-greater-protections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> to WBUR. \u201cI was able to get DACA in 2016, so I\u2019ve had it ever since and then just waiting to see what happens today.\u201d Pineda is originally from El Salvador.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Supreme Court blocked key Trump campaign issue on immigration, blocking the administration&#8217;s 2017 decision to end DACA, created under President Barack Obama. The Supreme Court cited a failure by the Department of Homeland Security to give an adequate justification for the termination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In&nbsp;<strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, about 8,000 people have received&nbsp;<strong>DACA<\/strong>&nbsp;status, a small share of the total unauthorized population. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonindicators.org\/article-pages\/2017\/september\/daca-by-the-numbers#:~:text=In%20Massachusetts%2C%20about%208%2C000%20people,of%20the%20total%20unauthorized%20population.&amp;text=In%20Massachusetts%2C%20approximately%2019%2C000%20of,unauthorized%20immigrants%20are%20DACA%2Deligible.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boston Indicators<\/a>, In&nbsp;<strong>Massachusetts<\/strong>, approximately 19,000 of the state&#8217;s 210,000 unauthorized immigrants are&nbsp;<strong>DACA<\/strong>-eligible.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>&#8216;s immediate reaction to the legal defeat was a tweet. &#8220;Horrible &amp; politically charged decisions&#8221; calling them &#8220;shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">These horrible &amp; politically charged decisions coming out of the Supreme Court are shotgun blasts into the face of people that are proud to call themselves Republicans or Conservatives. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., celebrated the decision. In describing who DACA recipients are, of roughly 700,000, Durbin said 200,000 are essential workers and 40,000 of them are health care workers helping fight the novel&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/health\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">coronavirus<\/a>, reported ABC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Massachusetts&#8217; lawmakers were also quick to react to the news the Trump Administration&#8217;s attempt to do away with protections for young immigrants was blocked.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senator Elizabeth Warren also welcomed the news in a tweet, \u201cI\u2019m happy the Supreme Court upheld DACA to protect Dreamers from the crisis Trump created.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Supreme Court made the right choice to overturn Donald Trump\u2019s cruel termination of DACA\u2014but this fight is far from over. Of those, about 800,000 have enrolled. Another 400,000 would be eligible if they met the education requirement. About 230,000 more are younger than the minimum age of 15 but would become eligible if they get a high-school diploma or equivalent. The vast majority are from Mexico, with smaller contingents from Guatemala, El Salvador and other countries. Most have no connection to their previous countries. Some didn&#8217;t know they were undocumented until they sought driver&#8217;s licenses or college aid. Current law makes it difficult for them to obtain legal status unless they leave the country and apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(<a
