Wendy Sanchez\u2019s family has been making silver pendants, jewelry, and statues for three generations in Taxco de Alarc\u00f3n, Mexico. Five years ago, the 35-year-old brought her family business to Chicago and started La Plater\u00eda. The social media business started as a hobby, but S\u00e1nchez said it generated enough revenue that around four months ago, she started working on La Plater\u00eda full-time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1nchez moved to Chicago 10 years ago, but she is proud to be from Taxco, a city known for its sterling silver craftsmanship. Sterling silver jewel is durable, and will not tarnish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sellers can claim their products are sterling silver or from Taxco, but buyers often have no way of verifying if it\u2019s true. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of fraud these days,\u201d Sanchez said<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1nchez\u2019s entire family lives in Taxco, where each member specializes in a different aspect of the silversmithing industry. They oversee the entire process, from when the silver is extracted from Taxco\u2019s rich silver mines, to the design and manufacturing of the finished products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, customers can order earrings, rings, pendants and more from La Plateria\u2019s Instagram and Facebook page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can clean the silver with toothpaste, baking soda,\u201d said S\u00e1nchez.  \u201cBecause we\u2019re direct manufacturers, obviously we\u2019re selling a material that we know, that comes from us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e1nchez chose a silhouette of Taxco\u2019s famous Church of Santa Prisca as the business logo. Her hope is that one day La Plater\u00eda has a physical location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I enjoy the most is doing what I like, especially surrounded by my family,\u201d S\u00e1nchez said. \u201cFor me, it\u2019s been an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
