{"id":5063089,"date":"2024-09-02T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/illatinonews.com\/?p=5063089"},"modified":"2024-09-02T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T08:00:00","slug":"we-cant-lose-hope-a-pilsen-mothers-mission-to-save-monarch-butterflies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/illn\/2024\/09\/02\/we-cant-lose-hope-a-pilsen-mothers-mission-to-save-monarch-butterflies\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We can\u2019t lose hope\u2019: A Pilsen Mother\u2019s Mission to Save Monarch Butterflies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Haga clic aqu\u00ed para leer la historia en espa\u00f1ol.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Claudia Galeno-Sanchez, monarch butterflies are more than a fluorescent orange insect with wings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe monarch butterfly is like an icon, something that Mexicans identify with,\u201d she said. \u201cThe only difference between monarch butterflies and us as Mexicans, is that we do not have the freedom to cross borders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she was 14 years old, her father passed away in Mexico from cancer but she wasn\u2019t able to visit him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI couldn&#8217;t go to say goodbye to him, to tell him that I loved him very much, to give him the last hug,\u201d Galeno-Sanchez said in Spanish. \u201cIt\u2019s like a scar that stays with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The heart-wrenching experience molded Galeno-Sanchez and with the help of neighbors, the now 47-year-old converted her Pilsen home into a vibrant butterfly sanctuary to bring awareness to the species that was <a href=\"https:\/\/monarchjointventure.org\/blog\/iucn-changes-migratory-monarch-status-from-endangered-to-vulnerable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared vulnerable to going extinct<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother of two children had already founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenforgreenspaces.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Women for Green Spaces<\/a> nearly two years prior, an organization that promotes access to green spaces and the growth of pollinators in Pilsen by planting native plants for the monarch habitat to thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_5102.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5063079\" style=\"width:646px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Members of the Pilsen community helped paint butterflies outside of Claudia Galeno-Sanchez\u2019s home.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-spotify wp-block-embed-spotify wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: A mother\u2019s mission to save monarch butterflies\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; They reach Chicago by the end of May and in most summers, there are three generations of monarchs in Illinois, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturemuseum.org\/conservation-research\/monarch-butterfly#:~:text=They%20reach%20the%20Chicago%20area%20by%20the%20end%20of%20May.&amp;text=In%20most%20summers%2C%20there%20are,June%2C%20July%2C%20and%20August.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Museum<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the species\u2019 population has dropped by more than 80% since the 90s in Central Mexico and by more than 95% since the 80s in coastal California, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/species\/invertebrates\/monarch_butterfly\/#:~:text=Historically%20monarchs%20across%20American%20prairie,by%2095%25%20over%20two%20decades.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Biological Diversity<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Zaya, a botanist at the Illinois Natural History Survey, says part of the species\u2019 decline is tied with the loss of natural grasslands across the state which makes it harder for milkweeds to grow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milkweeds are the only plant monarchs can lay their eggs on and caterpillars can feed on. Without it, they cannot complete their life cycle.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the milkweed in the state was in corn and soybean fields that 25 to 30 years ago had milkweeds in them and now they don&#8217;t because the way that farming is done is different,\u201d Zaya said. \u201cIt&#8217;s a lot more reliant on chemicals that remove weeds, including milkweed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are other factors that have led the monarch\u2019s numbers to fluctuate drastically including climate change, droughts, pollution, deforestation, disease outbreaks and pesticide and herbicide use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of these effects have been caused by human beings, Galeno-Sanchez pointed out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are practically destroying our planet. We are destroying the natural habitats of species and the problem is that we have to realize that after we destroy the pollinators and all the other species, we are going to destroy ourselves as human beings,\u201d Galeno-Sanchez said. \u201cWe are not immortal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though planting more native plants like milkweeds won\u2019t solve the problem, it is \u201cpart of the solution,\u201d Zaya said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat planting more milkweed does is it raises the baseline of monarchs that we can have and in raising the baseline, we have more protection from those dips,\u201d Zaya said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_5076.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5063080\" style=\"width:642px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>A community garden in Pilsen where milkweed grows.<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_5159.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5063077\" style=\"width:642px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Claudia Galeno-Sanchez holds a yellow daisy in her hand. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In order for the monarch species to truly survive, it requires a collaborative plan between Mexico, the United States and Canada.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diego P\u00e9rez Salicrup, a plant ecologist at the Institute for Ecosystem and Sustainability Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, has been studying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iies.unam.mx\/laboratorios\/ecologia-manejo-recursos-forestales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forest fires and their impacts<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">P\u00e9rez Salicrup said when forest fires are suppressed, it can lead combustibles to build up and it can cause catastrophic fires like the flames that engulfed Yellowstone National Park in 1988.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn places like the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, if we remove the fires, we will come across that same scenario in 30 years,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we want is for there to be fires but in the dose and the frequency that the forest needs it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When forest fires are controlled, it can become an effective way to conserve biodiversity, P\u00e9rez Salicrup added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it\u2019s much easier said than done.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe reality is that we don&#8217;t know how much you need, or how often, or how&#8230; There&#8217;s a lot of research we have to do,\u201d P\u00e9rez Salicrup said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another part of P\u00e9rez Salicrup\u2019s research has taken place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iies.unam.mx\/laboratorios\/ecologia-manejo-recursos-forestales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">San Miguel Topilejo<\/a>, one of Mexico\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=42&amp;v=fXTOgVLR-Iw&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.iies.unam.mx%2F&amp;source_ve_path=MTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywzNjg0MiwxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMjcyOTksMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywxMzkxMTcsMTM5MTE3LDEzOTExNywyMzg1MQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most important forested areas<\/a> that is essential to the well-being of around one-fifth of the country\u2019s population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">P\u00e9rez Salicrup said one of the challenges he has faced has been trying to maintain the butterflies&#8217; habitat while ensuring that the people who live there have autonomy over themselves and the forest burning process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow do you come up with a strategy in a semi-rural town in Mexico City where most of the inhabitants have not gone to college?\u201d P\u00e9rez Salicrup asked. \u201cHow can you organize the community so that at least some young people can go to university directly and not have to depend on a Moreliano who has to tell them what to do with their fuels? Because in the future, they are the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenges become more complex and solutions require everyone at the table.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPutting together this puzzle should not be done with the intention of finding which of the three countries is to blame,\u201d P\u00e9rez Salicrup said. \u201cWhat we have to find is how we can work together to ensure that we continue this [butterfly\u2019s migration] phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elsa Anderson, an environmental assistant professor at Northwestern University, said that anyone can play a role in saving monarch butterflies and the greater environment, \u201cno matter where you live.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFind a way to plant milkweed,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cWhether that\u2019s in a pot, whether that\u2019s asking your property manager if you can have a little space in the lawn to grow some native plants, whether it\u2019s asking your property manager to stop spraying pesticides, everybody has a little entryway to their home or a small pocket of space where they can plant milkweed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/IMG_5165-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5063095\" style=\"width:642px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Claudia Galeno-Sanchez started planting native plants in her backyard. <\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anderson said she also recommends people download apps like <a href=\"https:\/\/budburst.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BudBurst<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inaturalist.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iNaturalist<\/a> which can teach them about different plants and animals around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThose are great ways to build your knowledge and your understanding, without needing to get a college degree or read a big heavy book,\u201d Anderson said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next step in making a difference is to get involved in the political process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTalk to your alderman, talk to your homeowners association,\u201d Anderson said. \u201cTalk to people who are making decisions at a higher level about your neighborhood and advocate for more native plants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a lot of benefits to planting native plants that people can point out to those in positions of power in order to be heard, Anderson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those benefits include: <a href=\"https:\/\/d2vv0elwdk9lnk.cloudfront.net\/resource_files\/SaveMoneyProtectEnviornment_Plants%20for%20Birds.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lower watering costs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/stormwater.allianceforthebay.org\/take-action\/installations\/rain-gardens#:~:text=Sizing%20of%20rain%20gardens%20is,allow%20for%20better%20water%20absorption.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher water infiltration<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/wildflowers\/Native_Plant_Materials\/Native_Gardening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing flooding<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/plantnovanatives.wordpress.com\/2016\/07\/30\/native-plants-keep-you-cool\/#:~:text=Stately%20canopy%20trees%20such%20as,through%20during%20the%20winter%20months.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowering heat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wildones.org\/psychological-health\/#:~:text=By%20cultivating%20native%20plant%20landscapes,influence%20our%20minds%20and%20bodies.&amp;text=Similarly%2C%20native%20plants%20reduce%20depressive,lack%20of%20interest%20in%20activities.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improving mental health<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardeningknowhow.com\/special\/urban\/community-gardens-lower-crime-rates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reducing violence in neighborhoods<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galeno-Sanchez first nurtured milkweeds in her backyard butterfly sanctuary but has since planted the native plants across Pilsen including at over four local elementary schools and several local churches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women for Green Spaces, with its nearly 40 members, recently earned $14,000 from <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagorti.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chicago Region Tree Initiative<\/a> which will be used to locate places in the city that disproportionately lack trees and plant them there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Galeno-Sanchez said she hopes adding more trees can help rebuild another piece of a frailing ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to increase the number of trees, and not only in Pilsen, we have to increase the number of trees all over the planet, in all countries,&#8221; she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Women for Green Spaces also earned $3,000 from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholekidsfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whole Kids<\/a> to plant fruits and vegetables in Orozco Community Academy\u2019s community garden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite her efforts, Galeno-Sanchez only has faded memories of a garden that was once filled with monarch butterflies fluttering their wings while resting on leaves.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis year has really shaken me up in a way I didn\u2019t expect,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn&#8217;t expect to see my garden empty, without monarch butterflies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mother said she can\u2019t help but feel like everything she is doing is still not enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHonestly, I would like to feel that all this is helping but I am losing hope. I don\u2019t want to lose them,\u201d She said, letting out a deep sigh before picking her head up and saying with conviction: \u201cLook, we can\u2019t lose hope because we have no other choice.
