Collaborations like the coalition of Chicago&#8217;s largest Black and Latino-serving organizations to produce the candidate conversation event are integral to the health of democracy.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Chicago mayoral Q&amp;A session: March 20, 2023\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0P-fuDwaaCU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chicagoans flocked to the Chicago History Museum on Monday night for a chance to hear from mayoral candidates Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas before the April 4 Runoff Election. Chicago\u2019s Black and Brown Future: Conversations with the Mayoral Candidates focused on issues impacting Black and Latino communities including housing, crime, education, economic development, equitable representation, and immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation was moderated by veteran journalists, longtime CBS2 Chicago reporter, Dorothy Tucker and publisher of IL Latino News, Hugo Balta. Tucker is the current president of the National Association of Black Journalists. The two did not appear on stage together. Johnson went first, followed by a short intermission, and then Vallas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent poll by Northwestern\u2019s Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy showed that crime was top of mind for many voters, rated as the most important issue for 54 percent of Black voters and 46 percent of Latino voters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson said he would focus on getting to the root of crime by investing in youth programs and hiring 200 more detectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to double the amount of young people that we hire, not just for summer positions but year-round positions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On crime, Vallas stated that he wants to fulfill current Chicago Police Department vacancies, not expand CPD. He added that he wants to add officers to CTA platforms \u201cbecause people are afraid to take the CTA,\u201d citing another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbez.org\/stories\/chicago-cta-riders-on-delays-safety-filth-smoking\/00289237-4e60-4d9a-b355-8923fe433449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent poll by WBEZ<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5061616\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Johnson-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5061616\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"5061617\" src=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Vallas-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5061617\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Johnson and Vallas said that they would support the <a href=\"http:\/\/illatinonews.com\/new-coalition-working-to-meet-the-needs-of-newly-arrived-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Welcome to IL coalition<\/a>, vowing to support immigrants and migrants arriving in the city. Governor JB Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation to speed up the availability of state money and resources to help deal with the busloads of migrants being sent to Chicago from Texas.<br><br>There are now two weeks left before a new mayor is elected. Early Voting is open in all 50 Wards.
