{"id":5094795,"date":"2026-02-16T07:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/?p=5094795"},"modified":"2026-02-16T07:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T12:00:00","slug":"hartford-parking-contract-ice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2026\/02\/16\/hartford-parking-contract-ice\/","title":{"rendered":"Hartford looks to end parking contract with ICE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam has requested the immediate termination of a contract between the Hartford Parking Authority and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Jan. 27 letter, Arulampalam asked HPA CEO Kay Al Mannai to terminate an agreement allowing ICE employees to use the city-owned parking lot at 141 Sheldon St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe City of Hartford does not deem ICE personnel to be authorized as visitors of the City of Hartford,\u201d Arulampalam wrote. \u201cI respectfully request that their licenses to use the lot at 141 Sheldon Street be terminated immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/recipient\/ef3e2319-a206-b6f1-c755-248af01bc22b-P\/latest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>records indicate<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;ICE and HPA have contracted for parking since 2015. An ICE field office is located within the Abraham A. Ribicoff Federal Building at 450 Main St.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe parking contract was brought to our attention about two weeks ago through a constituent submission on our city website,\u201d said Cristian Corza, Arulampalam\u2019s deputy chief of staff. \u201cOnce we learned of the contract, we immediately moved to cancel it in partnership with the HPA.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe city has been working with the HPA to cancel the contract as quickly as administratively possible and will continue our efforts to do so,\u201d Corza said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News of the contract and Arulampalam\u2019s request to cancel it were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/readsludge.com\/2026\/02\/11\/these-cities-and-states-hold-contracts-with-ice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>first reported<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by nonprofit news outlet&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/readsludge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Sludge<\/u><\/a>. Sludge previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/readsludge.com\/2026\/01\/21\/hudson-river-park-trust-to-end-longstanding-ice-contract-following-sludge-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>reported<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on the termination of a similar ICE parking contract in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arulampalam has been critical of ICE as immigration actions have ramped up nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFederal agents have acted with impunity and a clear intent to antagonize local communities across our country,\u201d he said last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpublic.org\/news\/2026-01-08\/after-minneapolis-ice-shooting-ct-immigrant-rights-supporters-to-rally-in-ct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>January,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;protesters and journalists in Hartford were pepper-sprayed and a woman was struck by a federal vehicle outside the Ribicoff building during a vigil for Renee Good, the unarmed mother shot and killed in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ICE did not immediately return a request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
