{"id":5085002,"date":"2016-01-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-05T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/three-kings-day-celebration-traditions-behind-el-dia-de-los-reyes\/"},"modified":"2016-01-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-01-05T05:00:00","slug":"three-kings-day-celebration-traditions-behind-el-dia-de-los-reyes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2016\/01\/05\/three-kings-day-celebration-traditions-behind-el-dia-de-los-reyes\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Kings&#039; Day Celebration: Traditions Behind &#039;El D\u00eda De Los Reyes&#039;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Photo credit: slideplayer.com<br \/>\nSanta Claus may have gone back to the North Pole to rest, but it doesn\u2019t mean the gift-giving (and receiving) is over &#8212; at least not for the thousands of children in Latin America and Spain anxiously awaiting<a href=\"http:\/\/three-kings-day.123holiday.net\/\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">&#8220;El D\u00eda de los Reyes&#8221; Celebration on Jan. 6th.<\/span><\/a><br \/>\nFor many Christians, the holiday season doesn\u2019t officially end until the 12th day of Christmas known as the &#8220;Feast of the Epiphany&#8221; or &#8220;Three Kings&#8217; Day&#8221;.<br \/>\nThe holiday <a href=\"http:\/\/voces.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/01\/02\/reyes-magos_n_2346912.html\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">marks the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the three Kings<\/span><\/a>, also referred to as three Wise Men or Magi. According to the Gospel of Matthew, the men found the divine child by following a star across the desert for twelve days to Bethlehem. Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/dreamantilles.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/mechior-gaspar-and-balthazar.html\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">representing Europe, Arabia, and Africa respectively<\/span><\/a> &#8212; travelled by horse, camel, and elephant in order to present baby Jesus with three symbolic gifts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"modulous_mid_article\" class=\"ad_spot\"><\/div>\n<p>The gold offered by one of the wise men is a<a href=\"http:\/\/infocatolica.com\/blog\/puertadedamasco.php\/1012311203-oro-incienso-y-mirra\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\"> symbolic acknowledgment of Jesus\u2019 royal standing<\/span><\/a> as &#8220;King of the Jews,&#8221; while the frankincense manifests the divine nature of the baby\u2019s existence, since he is not an earthly king but the Son of God. And finally the myrrh, often used to embalm corpses, was gifted to the newborn as a symbol of Jesus\u2019 mortality &#8212; foreshadowing his death as a means to cleanse humanity of its sins.<br \/>\nReyes festivities come in different shapes and sizes across the globe from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/01\/04\/three-kings-day-celebrations_n_1184047.html\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">community parades<\/span><\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/12\/26\/disneys-three-kings-day-celebration-highlights-hispanic-heritage_n_2366853.html\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">three-day celebrations at Disneyland.<\/span><\/a> In Mexico, thousands gather every year to taste a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/01\/03\/rosca-de-reyes-king-cake-mexico_n_2404929.html?utm_hp_ref=latino-voices&amp;ir=Latino%20Voices\" target=\"_hplink\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">mile-long &#8220;Rosca de Reyes&#8221; (Kings\u2019 Bread)<\/span><\/a> while others simply make the holiday staple at home honoring the tradition to hide a baby jesus figurine within the bread &#8212; the person whose slice has the figurine must prepare tamales for everyone on the Day of the Candles on Feb. 2!<br \/>\n<strong>Here are some of the traditions, recipes, and celebration that surround &#8220;El D\u00eda de los Reyes&#8221;. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally baked round as an allusion to a King&#8217;s crown, the Rosca de Reyes (or Kings&#8217; Bread) is a staple of the holiday. Hidden within the sweet bread is a &#8220;baby jesus&#8221; figurine &#8212; the individual who finds the toy in their slice must then prepare <em>tamales<\/em> for everyone on the Day of the Candles,
