On November 3, Vargas was elected to the city council of Haverhill, Massachusetts, becoming their first Latino councilman.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row_article article_main-container\">\n<div class=\"article_col-main article_col-main-left article_main\">\n<div class=\"article-body\">\nOh, and he 22 years old.<br \/>\n&#8220;Some people think that you have to be a little crazy to announce that you&#8217;re running for office at 21 years old &#8211; and I think there is certainly some truth to that,&#8221; he said. &#8220;In many ways, young people have been the movers and shakers throughout history, ushering in new ideas, perspectives and potential solutions to complex problems.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img_full\"><figcaption class=\"img-caption img-caption_default no-margin-bottom\"><span class=\"img-caption_txt\">Photo of Andy Vargas&#8217;s campaign kickoff event. <\/span> <i class=\"fa fa-camera\"><\/i>Andy Vargas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"ad-container ad-container_default ad-container_mobile ad-hide\">\n<div class=\"ad-label ad-hide\">Located just over 30 miles north of Boston, Haverhill is home to some 62,000 residents. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/quickfacts.census.gov\/qfd\/states\/25\/2529405.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">2010 census data<\/span><\/a>, about 15 percent of its residents are Hispanic or Latino. With the help of 75 campaign volunteers, Vargas spread his name throughout the city and and got the third most votes in the election: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eagletribune.com\/news\/haverhill\/haverhill-election-update-michitson-tops-council-newcomer-vargas-third-sullivan\/article_c571d4af-57dc-524f-b28f-ab55b49be1b4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">3,830<\/span><\/a>.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is literally a piece of the American Dream,&#8221;
