{"id":5084978,"date":"2016-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-02-06T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/latino-art-in-downtown-new-haven\/"},"modified":"2016-02-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-06T05:00:00","slug":"latino-art-in-downtown-new-haven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2016\/02\/06\/latino-art-in-downtown-new-haven\/","title":{"rendered":"Latino Art in Downtown New Haven"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"arc90_imcaption1\" class=\"caption-box floatl wDefault figfitfab\"><figcaption>\n<p class=\"caption-text\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ben Casiano with one of his female figures in the arts series, acrylic on canvas.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIs \u00a0there such a thing as a Latino aesthetic in art?<br \/>\nWhile the jury is out on that question, the first formal gallery show of Latino artists in downtown New Haven is unquestionably a significant event.<br \/>\nThat consensus emerged at the opening reception of &#8220;Latin Figures,&#8221; the new show at Gateway Community College\u2019s New Alliance Art Gallery at the corner of Church and George streets, which drew 40 admirers to the brightly lit, inviting gallery space for the Thursday night opening reception.<br \/>\nThe show runs through Feb. 17. Organized and curated by <a class=\"externalLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arte-inc.com\/\" rel=\"external noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Arte, Inc.<\/span><\/a> in Fair Haven, it features the work of five mid-career artists: Claudio Altesor, <span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Benjamin Casiano<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Ricky Mestre<\/span>, <a class=\"externalLink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.katonahartcenter.com\/faculty\/eddie-nino\/\" rel=\"external noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Eddie Nino<\/span><\/a>, and <span style=\"color: #0066cc\">Sandra Rossini<\/span>.<br \/>\nIt presents a range of styles and mediums, from Casiano\u2019s big, Matisse-like bold color works, to Nino\u2019s subdued but intense graphite portraits, to Mestre\u2019s graphic art-inspired messaging.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"arc90_imcaption2\" class=\"caption-box floatl wDefault figfitfab\"><\/figure>\n<p>Arte\u2019s David Greco, who curated the show with Casiano, said there are a lot of Latino artists at varying levels of achievement, many of whom have shown at Arte\u2019s gallery in Fair Haven.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"arc90_imcaption3\" class=\"caption-box floatl wDefault figfitfab\"><\/figure>\n<p>restaurants or bank lobbies, there has never been a full fledged show of Latino artists\u2019 work in a formal gallery space.<br \/>\nThe current show is just that, and that\u2019s why Greco pronounced it significant.
