It was a character emblazoned with a costume that was screaming patriotism.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8211; Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He said the &#8220;little brown and black little girls and boys&#8221; threw their arms up because they wanted to hug a superhero that looked like them and wore a costume inspired by the flag they were waving. It was &#8220;awe-inspiring,&#8221; he told Fox News Latino in his Brooklyn atelier.<br \/>\n&#8220;We\u2019ve been waiting for this story. Our community has been waiting for this story,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\nHe added: &#8220;What drew people to her wasn\u2019t the fact that it was a comic book \u2013 there is no comic book yet \u2013 it was what she represented, it was what she looked like. It was a character that was proud to be Puerto Rican. It was a character emblazoned with a costume that was screaming patriotism.&#8221;<br \/>\nLa Borinque\u00f1a is the first Latina superwoman and was influenced by the history of the U.S. territory and the ongoing financial struggles currently plaguing it. Her name comes from Puerto Rico\u2019s national anthem of the same title.<br \/>\nMiranda-Rodriguez, who is the editor-in-chief for DMC comic-book imprint\u00a0started by Run-DMC&#8217;s Darryl McDaniels,\u00a0took inspiration from the 1868 revolutionary version of the song by Lola Rodriguez de Tio, which he said it pretty much sounds like a superhero theme song.<br \/>\n&#8220;Come, Boricuas, come now, since freedom awaits us anxiously!&#8221; he said in Spanish. &#8220;The whole song is like fighting for social justice.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe Williamsburg-based artist
