The sign above Obama reads &#8220;The Latino Vote.&#8221; REUTERS\/Kevin Lamarque (UNITED STATES &#8211; Tags: POLITICS ELECTIONS HEADSHOT)<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWerner Oyanadel was at his office in Connecticut when a fresh President Barack Obama made a historic move for Latinos: he nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.<br \/>\nOyanadel, 45, who works for the state&#8217;s assembly, remembers the May 26, 2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/hispanic-heritage-foundation-honor-sonia-sotomayor-junot-diaz-n614326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">nomination<\/span><\/a> as a moment of joy that united much of the community during an otherwise bleak time.<br \/>\n&#8220;It was a celebration and in many ways it felt good in that everything that was happening near us was depressive \u2014 the economy was doing bad, the outlook for quality of life for Latinos was not positive,&#8221; said Oyanadel. &#8220;Later on, I was personally happy to realize this was just the beginning.&#8221;<br \/>\nSupporters of Obama tout substantial gains for Hispanics under his watch: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/vp-candidate-or-not-labor-sec-tom-perez-touts-democrats-n571076\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">return of Latinos to work<\/span><\/a> after a recession that hit them harder than white workers, as well as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2014\/09\/19\/hispanics-only-group-to-see-its-poverty-rate-decline-and-incomes-rise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">drop <\/span><\/a>in Hispanic poverty rates. About 4 million more Latinos obtained health insurance and the administration waged court battles for the preservation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2016-election\/federal-court-finds-texas-voter-id-law-violates-voting-rights-n613481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">voting rights<\/span><\/a>. Obama used his presidential power so thousands of young Latino immigrants <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/happy-birthday-daca-youths-say-it-improved-immigrants-lives-n181746\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">could remain <\/span><\/a>in the U.S. without fear of deportation and have the chance to work. And from his office, he forged a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/cubans-cuban-americans-share-their-emotions-after-obama-s-speech-n543726\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0066cc\">new relationship<\/span><\/a> with Cuba.<br \/>\nTo Oyandel&#8217;s delight, Sotomayor&#8217;s nomination was followed by a total of six Latinos in Cabinet secretary jobs over eight years as well the hiring of other Hispanics in key administration and White House jobs.
