Everywhere you look there\u2019s fields growing lettuce, strawberries, broccoli.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A growing number of the farm workers picking the broccoli and lettuce from those fields speak neither English nor Spanish but several Native Mexican languages\u00a0like Mixtec, Triqui, Zapotec. How are these farmworkers navigating life in California speaking their languages? Turns out, it&#8217;s not so easy.<br \/>\nNatividad Hospital, in the town of Salinas on California\u2019s Central Coast, is ground zero.\u00a0This\u00a0hospital, surrounded by fields, serves many farm workers in the valley.<\/p>\n<div class=\"media media-element-container media-image_on_left\">\n<div class=\"field-caption\">\nAngelica Isidro was the first interpreter hired by Indigenous Interpreters Plus. She interprets in Spanish and Mixteco.\u00a0 For years Angelica had been informally interpreting for her community;\u00a0interpreting over the phone while\u00a0she worked her day job\u00a0in the fields.\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"image__credit\">\nSeveral years ago, you would\u2019ve been lucky to find even a certified Spanish-language interpreter at Natividad. This was a problem \u2014 a\u00a0problem that became clear to Linda Ford when she became the CEO of the hospital\u2019s foundation nearly a decade ago.&#8221;I first went into the emergency department and asked one of the doctor\u2019s &#8216;is there anything you need in this emergency department.&#8217; And he was so frustrated and just said, \u2018I can\u2019t talk to my patients,\u00a0I cannot talk to my patients.\u2019&#8221;<br \/>\nAfter doing a language assesment, Ford found that four of the language most commonly spoken by patients coming to the hospital were Native Mexican languages. And within those four Native Mexican languages, there were dozens of variants.<br \/>\nYet finding indigenous interpreters proved to be a challenge.<br \/>\n&#8220;I thought &#8230; let me find an agency where I can find interpreters and I Googled but nothing came up,&#8221;
