\nEvery day, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) arrest people\u00a0who\u00a0cross the U.S.-Canada border illegally.
\nLast\u00a0Saturday, the Mounties arrested a Syrian family of three<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in Hemmingford, Que., a town just north of the border with the state of New York, after they crossed to apply for refugee status.
\nFour days later, the RCMP arrested a woman and a baby<\/span><\/a> who had crossed in deep snow from New York state.<\/p>\n

\nThose people are just five out of a growing number making illegal crossings into Canada as the United States has wrestled with President Donald Trump\u2019s executive order for\u00a0a travel ban<\/span><\/a> on refugees and citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Illegal crossings have increased lately, and much of the activity has been concentrated in Quebec, RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Camille Habel told Global News last week.
\nOver 450 people made refugee claims at land border crossings<\/span><\/a> in the province in January, according to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
\nB.C. and Manitoba have also seen more unlawful crossings in recent months.
\nAs many as 21 asylum seekers braved the cold and crossed the border into Emerson, Man.<\/span><\/a> on Saturday, after another 22 came over the previous weekend.
\nBut refugees aren\u2019t just coming from countries subject to Trump\u2019s travel ban.\u00a0As many as 27 Ghanaian men\u00a0have crossed into Manitoba from the United States since the summer.
\nTwo of those men lost all their fingers to frostbite<\/span><\/a> when they crossed in December.
