{"id":5084735,"date":"2017-04-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-15T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/maria-hinojosa-gives-voice-to-the-voiceless\/"},"modified":"2017-04-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2017-04-15T04:00:00","slug":"maria-hinojosa-gives-voice-to-the-voiceless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2017\/04\/15\/maria-hinojosa-gives-voice-to-the-voiceless\/","title":{"rendered":"Mar\u00eda Hinojosa Gives Voice To The Voiceless"},"content":{"rendered":" Mar\u00eda Hinojosa at the University of New Haven last week.\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">David Medina\/CTLatinoNews.com<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">The press availability in a small conference room at the University of New Haven<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s Dodds Hall gets off to an awkward start as those gathered fumble over who sits where at the conference table.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">The younger Anglo-American journalists, one of them a student, ask safe, standardized questions meant to elicit safe, standardized answers for an agreeable news feature on the keynote speaker for the university<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s 2017 Women<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s Leadership Conference.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">How did you get your start?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;Who were the people who most influenced you in your career?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">The subject of the interview is award-winning broadcast journalist Mar<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00ed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">a Hinojosa, who, minutes later, addressed a group of about 300 conference participants on <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Raising Our Voices, Telling Our Stories; Claiming Our Power.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">A five-foot tall, self-described <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">chaparra,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> wearing a spotted-leopard dress and knee-high black boots with three-inch heals, she seizes the opportunity to recount her 30-year success story. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">I started in journalism as a college student at Barnard College, working in the student radio station,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she begins. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">I never thought I could be a journalist because there were no Latina journalists when I was growing up. We didn<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">t exist,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she continues. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">A career counselor at Barnard forced me to apply for an internship at National Public Radio. I didn<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">t think I was good enough, but she insisted.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Hinojosa got the internship, which later grew into a permanent correspondent<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s position, making her the first Latina hired at National Public Radio. NPR, it turned out, was the first of many firsts for Ms. Hinojosa. From there, she explains, she went on to become the first Latina CNN correspondent,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">the first Latina correspondent at PBS, and the first Latina to anchor a FRONTLINE report, a report called <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Lost in Detention<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">that explored abuse at immigrant detention facilities. She has also done work for CBS News, WNBC-TV in New York and WGBH in Boston. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">She currently heads Futuro Media Group, a non-profit company that produces her signature Peabody Award-winning show, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Latino USA, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">which is distributed to 200 stations nationwide by NPR. She also anchors the PBS show <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">America by the Numbers with Mar<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00ed<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">a Hinojosa, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">a unique data-driven program dedicated to continually tracking the changing cultural and political trends in the United States, particularly as they pertain to Latinos.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Did you know, that Latina women are the demographic group that American consumer companies most want to capture?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she tells her audience later. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Studies show that they are more likely to make all the purchasing decisions in their family than any other women.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Ms. Hinojosa<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s body of work has earned her four Emmys; the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism; the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged; the Studs Terkel Community Media Award; and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Child Brides: Stolen Lives<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">. She is also the author of two books, <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Raising Paul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Crews: Gang Members Talk with Mar<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00ed<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">a Hinojosa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Things get interesting when she is asked why she chose to form her own media production company after PBS canceled her program and she did not return to on air reporting.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">The buck stops with me. I wouldn<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">t have to pitch my story ideas to anyone else to get a yay or a nay. I wanted editorial control,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she says. Many of the stories the Futuro Media Group produces for different outlets would not have gotten on the air otherwise. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">I wanted a newsroom where young people of diverse backgrounds could propose story ideas and not feel like they were the odd person out.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">Those stories include a history of the sanctuary movement in the United States; an interview with an inter-sex Latina musician; a feature on an undocumented Mexican New Yorker tattoo artist; an hour long program on the 100-year-old<\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\"> Fiesta de Los Vaqueros, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">otherwise known as the Tucson Rodeo; and stories on Latino Jews; Latino Asians; Latino Trump supporters and bodegas.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">For those who haven<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">t guessed by now, shining a light on the ongoing racial, ethnic and cultural diversification of the United States remains central to everything that Mar<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00ed<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">a Hinojosa is and everything her company produces. Born in Mexico City, she grew up on south side of Chicago because her father had secured a university position in the city. She lives with her husband, artist Germ<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00e1<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">n P<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u00e9<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">rez, and their two children in Harlem, where her production company is located. The family also owns a hideaway cottage named <\/span><i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: medium\">Boca Chica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\"> in an undisclosed part of Connecticut. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;I am the five things that this particular U.S. president may not be all thumb-up about: I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">m Mexican; I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">m an immigrant; I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">m a journalist; I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">m a woman; and I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">m flat chested,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she says.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">But, above all else, Ms. Hinojosa stresses that she is a true-blue American, who meant it when she took an oath to take up arms to defend the United States at her citizenship ceremony, but who is perplexed and uncomfortable that many like her, Latinos in particular, remain a relatively invisible part of American society.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">I am a living embodiment of diversity and change in America,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">she says. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">It<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">s part of my job to say we<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Times New Roman\">\u2019<\/span><span
