Torres has resigned as superintendent of the Connecticut Technical High School System, 5\u00bd weeks after being suspended while state officials investigated her approval of more than $4.5 million in payments to a public relations firm since 2014.<br \/>\nThe state&#8217;s education commissioner, Dianna Wentzell, and the chairman of the CTHSS board, Roberty Trefry, announced Monday evening that they had accepted Torres&#8217; resignation, effective next Monday.<br \/>\nThey issued a brief statement recognizing &#8220;Dr. Torres&#8217; contributions to the Technical High School System.&#8221;<br \/>\nBut they didn&#8217;t talk about the status of the probe by state and federal officials \u2014 or about questions Wentzell raised in mid-March when she cited &#8220;various areas of concern&#8221; about the payments to The Pita Group public relations and marketing firm of Rocky Hill.<\/p>\n<div class=\"trb_ar_cont\"><\/div>\n<aside class=\"trb_ar_sponsoredmod\"><\/aside>\n<p>On March 15, Wentzell wrote a letter asking the state Department of Administrative Services to conduct an investigation, saying that her concerns included: &#8220;potential violations of state or federal laws, regulations or policies relating to use and monitoring of funds, contracting, procurement and ethics; potential violations of laws, policies or duties relating to non-retaliation and the ability of employees to report compliance concerns; [and] potential neglect or misuse of state funds.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside class=\"trb_embed\">\n<div class=\"trb_embed_media\">\n<figure class=\"trb_embed_imageContainer_figure\"><\/figure>\n<div class=\"trb_embed_related\">\n<a class=\"trb_embed_media_link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.courant.com\/politics\/hc-technical-schools-20170316-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"trb_embed_related_title\">Tech School Chief Suspended, Under Investigation<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"trb_embed_related_caption\">\nThe superintendent of the 10,500-student Connecticut Technical High School System was placed on paid leave Thursday from her $169,000-a-year post for an indefinite period while officials investigate &#8220;various issues of concern&#8221; over payments made to a state contractor.<br \/>\nSuperintendent Nivea L.
