Regardless of an impressive list of Latinx nominees this year, led by Cardi B and Camila Cabello, music legend Gloria Estefan asserts, not enough is being done to\u00a0recognize women artists, especially women of color.\u00a0“You know, the Grammy voters, the vast majority are men, because\u00a0women haven’t really been in the industry in the numbers that men have,\u201d\u00a0she said while promoting a new project at\u00a0the Television Critics Association.<\/div>\n

According to the Recording Industry Association of America<\/a>:\u00a0Latin music revenues in the U.S. grew 37% in 2017 to $243 million primarily due to music streaming.\u00a0A major\u00a0turning point was the 2017 worldwide-hit \u2018Despacito\u2019 from Puerto Rican musicians Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee,\u00a0the\u00a0most streamed song in music history<\/a>.<\/div>\n

As non-Spanish speaking listeners become more familiar with Latin artists and more accustomed to hearing music in a different language, the demand for Latin artists\u2019 tours continues to grow, according to\u00a0Catherine Fournier, director of marketing at lyric licensing company,\u00a0LyricFind<\/a>, in an interview with\u00a0IQ<\/em>.<\/div>\n

The\u00a0stage name “Cardi B” comes from a shortened version of\u00a0Bacardi<\/a>\u00a0rum\u00a0which people used to call her by. After gaining popularity\u00a0for several videos going\u00a0viral<\/a>\u00a0on social media, she\u00a0<\/sup>joined the cast of the\u00a0VH1<\/a>\u00a0reality television series\u00a0Love & Hip Hop: New York<\/a>\u00a0in 2015. She left the program two years later to pursue a career in music full time.<\/div>\n
