Police Shooting\u00a0 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shooting\noccurred on April 20 and Cruz died on April 22 as a result of his wounds.\nAccording to WFSB, family members said Cruz was shoot twice in the head. Cruz\nwas unarmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A week after Cruz, who was known as &#8220;Chulo&#8221;, died, his family hired the well-known civil rights attorney, Benjamin Crump. Crump represented the families of both Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, according to courant.com. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wethersfield police officer Layau Eulizier and officer Peter Salvatore initially pulled Cruz over because the license plates on the car he was driving were not registered to the vehicle, according to the cbsnews.com article. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave. In 2015, Eulizier was involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting which was ruled justified.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video,\nreleased by the state\u2019s attorney\u2019s office on May 3, shows Wethersfield police\nofficer Layau Eulizier running in front of a car while it is briefly stopped,\naccording to cbs.com. Eulizier yells, \u201cShow me your hands\u201d several times and\nfires two shots through the windshield.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video footage is\nfrom Eulizier\u2019s cruiser, another cruiser dashcam and surveillance video from a\nnearby business.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video shows police stopping Cruz, who then takes off when the officer steps out of his cruiser, according to WFSB channel 3. Police catch up to Cruz down the road and attempt to stop him again. At that point, the video shows Cruz reversing his car in an attempt to flee, but his car and the police cruiser bump each other, and Cruz manages to take off.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point\nvideo footage shows the officer outside of his patrol car attempting to stop\nthe car from fleeing. Cruz drives his car toward the officer who starts firing\nhis gun directly into the windshield toward the driver.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the\nshooting, WFSB spoke with Cruz\u2019s girlfriend Stephanie Santiago, who was in the\npassenger\u2019s seat when the shooting occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She told WFSB that\nCruz had no intention of hurting anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was trying to\nsteer back and that\u2019s when the cop came in front of the car, so he wasn\u2019t\ntrying to hit the cop,\u201d Santiago said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In statement,\nWethersfield Mayor Amy Morrin Bello said, \u201cWe are grateful to the Hartford\nState\u2019s Attorney for promptly releasing the video evidence. This was a tragic\nevent and our hearts go out to the family of Anthony Vega Cruz. The three\nvideos may be disturbing to some as they show the danger of the events as they\nunfolded on April 20. This is a danger that our police officers face every day\nin the line of duty. We must be patient and allow the process to continue and\nwait to see the investigation through to completion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawyers for Cruz\u2019s\nfamily, Crump and Michael Jefferson said the videos show Eulizier \u201cacted\nrecklessly\u201d when he shot at the unarmed couple.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are\ndevastated, enraged and continue to demand justice for their son and brother,\u201d\nthe lawyers said in a statement. \u201cThe officer must pay for his actions. We urge\nthe State\u2019s Attorney to bring swift justice for this hurting family and\ncriminally charge the officer who killed Chulo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Sources:
