{"id":5084416,"date":"2019-07-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-23T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/u-s-census-puerto-ricos-population-in-a-free-fall\/"},"modified":"2019-07-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-23T04:00:00","slug":"u-s-census-puerto-ricos-population-in-a-free-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2019\/07\/23\/u-s-census-puerto-ricos-population-in-a-free-fall\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Census: Puerto Rico\u2019s population in a free fall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aftermath of Hurricane\nMaria had an impact on Puerto Rico that went beyond the damage to lives and\nstructures.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result of the\ndevastating 2017 hurricane, the island nation lost nearly 130,000 residents\nbetween 2017 and 2018 \u2014 residents who left the island to the mainland U.S.,\naccording to recently released U.S. Census data.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past decade, an estimated 40,000 people left the island annually, but 2018 marked the first year the migration out of the island hit six figures.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hartford Foundation estimated that more than 13,000 people came to Connecticut from Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. <\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is unclear if this is a new level of departure that will continue or if this is just because of the hurricanes\u2026it\u2019s too early to tell,\u201d Mark Hugo Lopez, director of global migration and demography research at the Pew Research Center, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/census-u-s-latino-population-grows-while-puerto-rico-sees-n1019496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of July 2018,\nthe number of people living in Puerto Rico was 3.2 million \u2014 a decline of 14.3\npercent since 2010. Figures from the 2010 census showed a population of 3.7\nmillion living on the U.S. territory at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New preliminary\ncensus data shows that Puerto Rico has lost about 530,000 people in eight\nyears.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this same\ntime period, Puerto Rico was trying to recover from the 2008 economic\nrecession, while at the same time surviving a severe financial crisis which was\ncompounded by devastating hurricanes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2013, more\nPuerto Ricans began to leave the island after austerity measures began to put\nstrains on people as it became increasingly evident that the island would not\nbe able to pay off roughly $120 billion in debt and pension obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SUGGESTION: Puerto Rico seeing large population declines among school-aged children <\/h4>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Bloomberg, the U.N. projections on global population trends see the number of people living in the U.S. territory falling by more than half by the end of the 21st Century &#8212; just 1.2 million versus about 3 million today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the population on the island shrank, the Latino population in the United States grew by more than 1 million between 2017 and 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Source:
