{"id":5084409,"date":"2019-07-30T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-07-30T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/empowerment-center-seeks-to-help-women\/"},"modified":"2019-07-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T04:00:00","slug":"empowerment-center-seeks-to-help-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2019\/07\/30\/empowerment-center-seeks-to-help-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Empowerment center seeks to help women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Women\u2019s Empowerment Center (WEC) at the Hartford offices of the Community Renewal Team held its formal opening earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ncenter opened in May, and during its formal opening on July 11, CRT President Lena\nRodriguez talked about her vision for the center.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center will help direct women to any services they need \u2014 whether it\u2019s housing, employment, childcare, mental health or some other service, Rodriguez said. It will also provide a comfortable setting for conversations, book clubs, movie nights and other activities.<\/p>\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I can be my own boss.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Karen Delgado, Magykal Moments <\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karen\nDelgado was able to open her own business with help from the empowerment\ncenter.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delgado,\nwho moved to Connecticut from Puerto Rico three years ago, saw a notice about a\nfree program to help women start their own business on Facebook. Delgado, who\nlives in the North End of Hartford, decided to enroll in the program offered by\nthe Women\u2019s Empowerment Center.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delgado,\nwhose son is autistic, saw it as an opportunity to earn a living while still\ntaking care of her son\u2019s needs including taking him to doctor and therapy\nappointments.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through\nthe program, Delgado was able to open her own business, Magykal Moments, a\nbaking and party decorating business.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\nwas only an idea in my head, but I saw I could do it,\u201d she said. \u201cI can be my\nown boss and manage my own schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Grand Opening of CRT&#039;s Women&#039;s Empowerment Center in Hartford featured on Fox 61\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/s0u9341iM5E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption> Grand Opening of CRT&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Empowerment Center in Hartford featured on Fox 61 <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\nopening of the center was also attended by Lt. Gov. Susan Bysiewicz and State\nTreasurer Shawn Wooden, community leaders and clients.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly\n60 percent of the people served by the non-profit community action agency in\nHartford and Middlesex counties, are women and nearly 31 percent are single\nparent, female-led households, Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Women\u2019s Empowerment Center can also serve as a venue for special programs such as the Small Business Association\u2019s training program, which is the program Delgado attended.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About $80,000 has been raised for the center over the past two-and-a-half years, Rodriguez said. The hope is to raise more money, including the purchase of couches and other comfortable furniture. The center has three computers that are available for members to use.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\ncenter is working to attract volunteer mentors who can provide various forms of\nassistance to women.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve heard of the good old boys\u2019 network?\u201d, Rodriguez asked. \u201cWe want to make a good old girls network.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve heard of the good old boys\u2019 network?
