{"id":5084289,"date":"2020-01-14T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-14T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/connecticut-schools-ready-to-accept-puerto-rican-students-displaced-by-earthquakes\/"},"modified":"2020-01-14T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T05:00:00","slug":"connecticut-schools-ready-to-accept-puerto-rican-students-displaced-by-earthquakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2020\/01\/14\/connecticut-schools-ready-to-accept-puerto-rican-students-displaced-by-earthquakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecticut schools ready to accept Puerto Rican students displaced by earthquakes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the earthquakes, aftershocks that rocked Puerto Rico last week, Connecticut is coming to the aid of the hundreds of the youngest victims on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker and interim Superintendent of Schools Iline Tracey said the city and school district are willing to help students and families who have been affected by the earthquake reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhregister.com\/news\/article\/New-Haven-schools-accepting-Puerto-Rican-students-14963416.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Haven Register<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, Elicker and Tracey said, \u201cThe City of New\nHaven and New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) are prepared to receive residents and\nstudents from Puerto Rico in the wake of this most recent disaster \u2014 including\nthose unaccompanied by a parent or guardian \u2014 and provide them with supplies,\nclothing, and transportation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, Dr. Verna Ruffin, superintendent of Waterbury public schools also announced help for any students from Puerto Rico who need to relocate. <\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VIDEO: Waterbury school district preparing for possible influx of students from Puerto Rico\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ID1HmhppBDM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption> \u201cWe recognize that it was such a disaster for Puerto Rico, but we also knew we\u2019d be impacted because so many of our families also have families that are still in Puerto Rico,\u201d said Dr. Verna Ruffin, Waterbury Superintendent. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Educators in Connecticut provided this same type of help following the devastation left by Hurricane Maria. During the 2018-2019 school year, an estimated 200 students who left the island, enrolled in New Haven\u2019s schools, according to nhregister.com.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Gov. Dannel Malloy\u2019s administration ultimately allocated additional funding to the school district halfway through the 2017-2018 school year. However, the district had been educating students at a lower cost per pupil for months before the additional funding was allocated, after having accommodated the students and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another earthquake strikes Puerto Rico; Connecticut asked to help <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> If you would like to help victims of the earthquakes, the Connecticut Institute for Community Development and the Puerto Rican Parade&nbsp;(CICD)&nbsp; has set up a  website to help collect funds. <\/p>\n\n\n<hr
