{"id":5084274,"date":"2020-02-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-06T05:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/hartford-public-schools-help-students-and-families-arriving-from-puerto-rico\/"},"modified":"2020-02-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-06T05:00:00","slug":"hartford-public-schools-help-students-and-families-arriving-from-puerto-rico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2020\/02\/06\/hartford-public-schools-help-students-and-families-arriving-from-puerto-rico\/","title":{"rendered":"Hartford Public Schools help students and families arriving from Puerto Rico"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 50 students from Puerto Rico have enrolled in Hartford Public Schools (HPS) since last month&#8217;s devastating earthquakes.\u00a0<br \/>\u00a0Students and their families come from at least 20 towns in Puerto Rico, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/puerto-rico-students-come-to-hartford-after-earthquakes\/2219089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by NBC Connecticut.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> \u201cThese efforts are part of our mission to prepare all students to succeed in school\u00a0and beyond,\u201d said Dr. Leslie Torres-Rodriguez, Superintendent of Schools. \u201cAfter Hurricane Maria, Hartford Public Schools received more than 450 displaced students. Once again, we are committed to do what\u00a0is necessary to support\u00a0students and families from Puerto Rico\u00a0as they\u00a0begin to rebuild their lives here in Hartford.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within a month of the deadly hurricane\u2019s rampage through several Caribbean islands in September 2017, 550 students, mostly from Puerto Rico, had enrolled in Connecticut schools and by May this total was more than 2,000, said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/SDE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE)\u00a0<\/a>public information director Peter Yazbak.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five districts which took in the most displaced students after Maria reported the following new arrival totals after the quakes: Hartford, 10; Waterbury, 8; New Britain, 9; Bridgeport, 0; New Haven, 11.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0SUGGESTION: Students displaced by Puerto Rico earthquakes begin to arrive in Connecticut<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The challenges displaced families face are beyond school enrollment. HPS\u2019 Welcome Center has provided a range of supports including food, housing, child care, after school programs, and other needs. \u00a0\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the U.S. Geological Survey,  a magnitude 5 earthquake struck the island on Tuesday &#8211; the 11th earthquake of at least that size in the last month.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome Center Program Coordinator Shelimar Ramirez says more students are likely to come given the ongoing aftershocks affecting Puerto Rico. <\/p>\n\n\n<p
