OBIE Award-winning play <em>Sanctuary City<\/em> premieres on Thursday, March 28, in partnership with Long Wharf Theatre based in New Haven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Martyna Majok, Sanctuary City follows two young DREAMers\u2014known as \u201cB\u201d and \u201cG\u201d\u2014three months after the attacks of 9\/11, as they continue to strive for the American dream in this post-9\/11 reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 3.6 million DREAMers, undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children, are living in the country. The majority of these individuals are not protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy, which temporarily shields about <a href=\"https:\/\/immigrationforum.org\/article\/dreamer-advocacy-resources\/#:~:text=There%20are%20as%20many%20as,on%20DACA%20for%20more%20information.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">580,000 DREAMers<\/a> from deportation and gives them work authorization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe understood the backdrop of 9\/11 was really important,\u201d shared Co-Director and Filmmaker Pedro Berm\u00fadez. \u201cWhat does it mean that this event has changed the world [and] now has also created conditions for immigrants\u2026in the country, where they realize whatever safety or security they were hoping to seek in this country [will] no longer exist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In their first collaboration, theatermaker Jacob G. Padr\u00f3n and Berm\u00fadez come together to co-direct this coming-of-age performance about migration, love, and impossible decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think the merging or blending of film and theater [has] been an ongoing development and process\u2026\u201d said Berm\u00fadez.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first half of the play has a montage-type structure that reflects a series of memories from B\u2019s point of view. To amplify this unique sequence, there is \u201ca live feed component, where two live cameras will cut to particular moments in the story,\u201d explained Berm\u00fadez.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another strategy to engage audiences was to remove the first row of seats so the stage could extend further into the audience. \u201cWe were trying to have our design and approach [lead to] a play that feels really immersive for audience members,\u201d said Berm\u00fadez.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, <em>Sanctuary City<\/em> was declared a New York Times Critic\u2019s Pick for the performance\u2019s in-depth depiction of the complex challenges, decisions, and sacrifices two undocumented teenagers have to persevere through at such young ages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn terms of understanding the more broad Latino community, this is the story of our time,\u201d said Berm\u00fadez. \u201cWe&#8217;ve seen just how divisive this issue is in our national and local politics.
