{"id":5059784,"date":"2024-01-25T13:06:48","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T18:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/?p=5059784"},"modified":"2024-01-25T13:06:48","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T18:06:48","slug":"unlikely-duo-takes-the-stage-at-theaterworks-hartford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2024\/01\/25\/unlikely-duo-takes-the-stage-at-theaterworks-hartford\/","title":{"rendered":"Unlikely Duo Takes The Stage At TheaterWorks Hartford"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HARTFORD\u2014Theatergoers can expect a heartwarming, off-beat comedy this winter in <em>The Garbologists,<\/em> which premieres at TheaterWorks Hartford on Thursday, February 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An exploration of identities, privileges, hierarchies\u2014and how these intersect\u2014<em>The Garbologists<\/em> follow an unlikely pair working in sanitation who unexpectedly discover a mutual understanding between themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Danny is a gruff, white, male, experienced NYC sanitation worker with a tough exterior while Marlowe is a driven Black, female, Ivy-League-educated \u201cnewbie\u201d who has been assigned to Danny\u2019s route. Written by Lindsay Joelle and directed by Rob Ruggiero, the performance runs from February 1 to February 25.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Playwright Joelle said she is inspired and intrigued by the experiences of individuals who can go unnoticed, unappreciated, or misunderstood by society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The_Garbologists_BTS-56-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5059812\" style=\"width:168px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bebe Nicole Simpson as Marlowe in The Garbologists. Photo Courtesy of TheaterWorks Hartford. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Garbologists<\/em> follows a consistent theme in her work as she believes in \u201ctaking people that seem, at first glance, very \u2018other\u2019\u2014either to each other or to the audience\u2014and then seeing how quickly you can forget that and put yourselves in their shoes and feel like you are on this journey with them so by the end, you have an increased awareness and increased empathy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo you hear this story, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s about trash,\u2019 \u2018it\u2019s about people who work in garbage.\u2019 But in reality\u2026it\u2019s a story about human experiences,\u201d shared <em>Garbologists<\/em> Set Designer <a href=\"https:\/\/marcelomg.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marcelo Mart\u00ednez Garc\u00eda<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in New York City, the creative team looked to express the city\u2019s natural urban and chaotic energy on stage. Although there\u2019s trash in the scenes, Garc\u00eda said they were intentional of staying away from \u201cgross\u201d garbage and instead choosing objects that could be more reflective of the work that sanitation workers do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe really didn&#8217;t want [the trash] to feel\u2026disgusting or portray this job as if it was that but more of the human, urban, working class,\u201d he said. Discarded objects in the show are also meant to highlight and comment on the division within social classes. In richer communities, \u201cthere\u2019s things that you would be like, \u2018why would someone throw that out?\u2019\u201d Garc\u00eda pointed out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The_Garbologists_BTS-45-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5059807\" style=\"width:178px;height:auto\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jeff Brooks as Danny in The Garbologists. Photo Courtesy of TheaterWorks Hartford. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aligning with the show\u2019s theme of hidden gems, the set design incorporates materials from past performances, recycling and revitalizing leftover pieces to efficiently create the snowy New York City scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to say that we reused junk\u2014we found <em>treasures<\/em> and things that have been used before and now they\u2019re being repurposed to create this world,\u201d explained Garc\u00eda. \u201cAnd there\u2019s some magic that\u2019s going to happen\u2026so we will have fun on the stage.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cast includes Jeff Brooks as Danny and Bebe Nicole Simpson as Marlowe, who are both making their TheaterWorks Hartford debuts. Performances run for 90 minutes without intermission at the historic 233 Pearl Street Theater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I love most about the play is the way it digs into this compelling relationship between two unlikely people and how they find a way to authentically connect,\u201d shared Ruggiero. \u201cTheir world isn\u2019t one we often see \u2013 the strenuous and frequently dangerous work of sanitation workers.
