{"id":5059624,"date":"2023-10-05T15:49:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/?p=5059624"},"modified":"2023-10-05T15:49:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-05T19:49:35","slug":"ballet-hispanico-an-inclusive-cultural-performance-in-new-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2023\/10\/05\/ballet-hispanico-an-inclusive-cultural-performance-in-new-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico: An Inclusive Cultural Performance in New London"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW LONDON\u2014National Dance Company and School, Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico, looks to showcase and celebrate the diversity of Hispanic\/Latino American cultures this Hispanic Heritage Month at the Garde Arts Center in New London on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ballethispanico.org\/calendar\/Ballet-Hisp%C3%A1nico-Performance-New-London-CT.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Friday, October 6<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York City-based organization performs in Connecticut every two to three years with varying contemporary and cultural productions, shared CEO and Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI became an artist because of this company, and I was so enamored of it because it spoke to belonging,\u201d Vilaro told CT Latino News. \u201cAnd feeling connected, that doesn&#8217;t happen immediately to immigrants or immigrant children\u2014It&#8217;s a process. So, I found this incredible space that embraces otherness and that embraces my culture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Cuba and raised in New York, Vilaro has dedicated his career to exploring and honoring the intersectionality within Latin American experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has created over 40 ballets\u2014showcased across the country\u2014received the Ruth Page Award for choreography in 2001, was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2016, and was awarded HOMBRE Magazine\u2019s 2017 Arts &amp; Culture Trailblazer of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it all started at Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico when he was still a student.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn 1985, I walked in through the door of Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico\u2026I went to take a [company] class and after class was done, the director Tina Ramirez\u2014who also happens to be the founder of the organization\u2014asked me to join the company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/EduardoVilaro_NEW-Headshot_PhotobyRachelNeville-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5059627\" style=\"width:231px;height:346px\" width=\"231\" height=\"346\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico CEO and Artistic Director Eduardo Vilaro first joined the organization as a dancer in 1985. Photo Courtesy of Rachel Neville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vilaro had three months left until graduation but Ramirez was passionate about having him join the company for an upcoming tour, so she called Vilaro\u2019s dean and got permission for him to start at the Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico Dance company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI cut my teeth as a professional dancer in this organization, immediately traveling the world,\u201d Vilaro said. \u201cAs an immigrant kid from the Bronx, it was just a big deal to acclimate and assimilate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vilaro began teaching classes and developing programs at the organization, before becoming a lead voice for Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico. A decade later, Vilaro went on to get a master\u2019s degree in Interdisciplinary Arts at Columbia College Chicago. He then decided to start his own Latino-centric dance organization, Luna Negra Dance Theater in Chicago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2009, Vilaro returned to Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico as its artistic director when Ramirez stepped down from the role.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think with each generation comes a change,\u201d Vilaro said. \u201cFor years, we were doing works that mainly showed the beauty, the passion, the cisgendered ideals of Latino culture\u2014and that&#8217;s okay, because that&#8217;s what was acceptable.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vilaro explained how shows like West Side Story that center around Hispanic\/Latino individuals and showcase their culture can still be stereotypical portrayals of a diverse population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I brought to this organization was an opening up and an expansion of what it means to be Latino and how we see ourselves,\u201d he shared. \u201cAs a gay man, I want to show the world that I am Latino and gay too\u2026That it&#8217;s not exclusive, it is integrated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vilaro shared how important it is to him that the organization showcases intersectionality and progressive ideals to their Latine audiences as the Hispanic\/Latino culture is historically misogynistic and anti-LGBTQ+.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe wanted to show what Latinx means today\u2026Diversity in its full richness is where we\u2019ve come to now at Ballet Hisp\u00e1nico,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re coming from a time where we had to fit in\u2026because that&#8217;s what they expected us to do. They expected the handsome, mustached Latino with the cigarette and they expected the sultry Latina and we don&#8217;t have to do that anymore. We can say, forget it. We&#8217;re bigger.
