{"id":5059110,"date":"2023-02-01T15:48:09","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T20:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ctlatinonews.com\/?p=5059110"},"modified":"2023-02-01T15:48:09","modified_gmt":"2023-02-01T20:48:09","slug":"new-hartford-play-features-all-latinx-cast-and-creative-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/2023\/02\/01\/new-hartford-play-features-all-latinx-cast-and-creative-team\/","title":{"rendered":"New Hartford Play Features All Latinx Cast and Creative Team"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HARTFORD\u2014Theatergoers can expect a striking new play featuring an all Latinx cast and creative team beginning this Friday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Queen of Basel<\/em> takes place within the Latinx community during Miami\u2019s Art Basel as an adaptation of August Strindberg\u2019s classic play, <em>Miss Julie<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI couldn\u2019t be more excited to make my TheaterWorks Hartford debut with a play showcasing such vivid, flawed, and imperfect characters with a dynamic, female protagonist at its core,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/cristinaangeles.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Director Cristina Angeles<\/a> commented. \u201cLatinx stories are rarely seen on stage, and I hope this is just the beginning of a much longer conversation surrounding our varied, lived experiences, and the art that is created as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Written by <a href=\"http:\/\/hilarybettiswriter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Playwright Hilary Bettis<\/a>, <em>Queen of Basel<\/em> will run February 3-26 at TheaterWork Hartford\u2019s historic property at 233 Pearl Street, Hartford, CT.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The play will also steam on demand from February 19-26.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen planning the 2022-2023 season, I felt it was essential to include a story that speaks to our Latin community,\u201d Artistic Director Rob Ruggiero shared. \u201cIt\u2019s human, it\u2019s raw, it\u2019s completely compelling \u2014 and it\u2019s in that engagement that we are also provoked into important conversations about privilege, race, power, and color.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Set in Miami\u2019s Art Basel, the performance follows real estate heiress Julie after she tangles with her mogul father during an event thrown at his South Beach hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJulie plots her next move\u2026with Christine, a waitress who recently fled violence in Venezuela, and Christine\u2019s fianc\u00e9 John, an Uber driver with ambitions,\u201d reads the press release. \u201cThis explosive elixir of power, class, and race within the Latinx community examines the timelessness of love and betrayal in this bold new play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cast features actors Silvia Dionicio as Christine, Kelvin Grullon as John, and Christine Spang as Julie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Queen of Basel<\/em> is recommended for those over the age of 18 as it contains strong language and adult content.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In-person tickets range from $25 &#8211; $65 and can be purchased online at <a href=\"http:\/\/twhartford.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">twhartford.org<\/a> or by calling (860)527-7838.
