State Rep.\u00a0Hilda E. Santiago,\u00a0D-Meriden,\u00a0said serving people and working in state government is her biggest passion. Her involvement in local government started in 1990, Santiago said. In 2005, she became the first Puerto Rican female to win an open seat on Meriden’s City Council, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\u00a0March celebrating Women\u2019s History Month, the Latino Communities Reporting Lab<\/a>\u00a0interviewed Santiago and three other Latinas who are making an impact in the Meriden community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, I am proud to say that I am the first Latina to be named Assistant Deputy Speaker Pro-Tempore \u2014 a high ranking leadership post in the House of Representatives,\u201d Santiago said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery vote I cast in the legislature represents the voice of the people in my district and the state. Securing critical safety net services and ensuring a better Connecticut for all residents and their families have always been top priorities for me,\u201d Santiago said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vowing to fight for voting rights and help her party attract the state\u2019s growing Hispanic-Latino population, Santiago officially announced her candidacy for secretary of the\u00a0state in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are still facing obstacles and barriers when they go to vote,\u201d Santiago said on WNHH\u00a0FM\u2019s\u00a0\u200b\u201cDateline New Haven\u201d program. \u201dWe still have a\u00a0lot of work to\u00a0do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
