Suero is interested in the intersection of journalism and social justice and is currently interning at St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, the largest homeless shelter in Connecticut, wrote the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New England Chapter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NAHJNewEngland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ),<\/a> in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nahjnewengland.wordpress.com\/gladi-suero-is-the-2021-zavala-scholarship-winner\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nahjnewengland.wordpress.com\/gladi-suero-is-the-2021-zavala-scholarship-winner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLatinx people have been shut out of the media for far too long. We need to have a voice in news writing and newsgathering in order for readers, Latinx or not, to get the full picture,\u201d Suero wrote as part of the winning application. \u201cThis goes so much deeper than needing to meet diversity and inclusion expectations. This is about whose voice is telling the story and the Latinx voice is a strong, colorful, multifaceted one that needs to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suero, who uses they\/them pronouns, is the tenth Latinx student to receive a Hortencia Zavala Scholarship. The fund was created in 2016 by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HugoBalta\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HugoBalta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hugo Balta,<\/a> twice president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAHJ<\/a>, and owner\/publisher of the <a href=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/\">Latino News Network <\/a>as a way to help to strive for Latinx students while honoring the legacy of his abuelita, Hortencia Zavala.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is crucial that the next generation of diverse journalists get the education and mentoring necessary to produce authentic narratives about the challenges and opportunities of the emerging majority,\u201d Balta said. \u201cThe lack of Hispanic\/Latino representation in newsrooms often produces one dimensional, biased storytelling shaping the general public\u2019s perception of a dynamic community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s scholarship was facilitated and judged by <a href=\"https:\/\/nahjnewengland.wordpress.com\/meet-the-hortencia-zavala-student-journalism-scholarship-judges\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nahjnewengland.wordpress.com\/meet-the-hortencia-zavala-student-journalism-scholarship-judges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three members of the New England Chapter of NAHJ<\/a>: M\u00f3nica Hern\u00e1ndez, an anchor for WMUR TV in New Hampshire; Steph Sol\u00eds, the digital editor of the Boston Business Journal and the Providence Business Journal; and Kevin G. Andrade, a freelance journalist based in Rhode Island who specializes in issues related to immigrant communities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was blown away by the depth and talent this year\u2019s applicants demonstrated,\u201d Sol\u00eds said. \u201cIf this pool of applicants has taught me anything, it\u2019s that the next generation of Latinx journalists not only wants to carve a space in newsrooms that have historically been majority-white but is also ready to interrogate and change how news outlets cover historically underrepresented communities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Guerrero<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suero joins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/zulymar-droz-guerrero-124051144\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zulymar Droz Guerrero<\/a>&nbsp;as this year&#8217;s recipient of the scholarship. <\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guerrero is the Editor-in-Chief of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/revistaacg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuentagotas<\/a>, a news magazine published by the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/upra.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Puerto Rico, Arecibo (UPRA)<\/a>&nbsp;chapter of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nahj.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAHJ.<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the Hortencia Zavala Foundation (HZF), a not-for-profit organization expanded its support of young journalists to include a <a href=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/journalism-camp-covering-race-ethnicity-and-culture\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/journalism-camp-covering-race-ethnicity-and-culture\/\">journalism camp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/journalism-camp-meet-the-fellows\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/journalism-camp-meet-the-fellows\/\">Covering race, ethnicity, and culture: a guideline for fair and accurate storytelling<\/a><\/em>, led by Balta, was a free 12-week course designed to go beyond the inverted pyramid of basic news writing in examining the terminology, usage, and word choice of stories&nbsp;providing greater visibility and understanding of deep-rooted inequities in all aspects of society.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latinonewsnetwork.com\/ctln\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/IMG_0890.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5057307\" \/><figcaption> 2021 Journalism Camp Fellows <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Every conversation was insightful and provided different perspectives,&#8221; said Daniela Sandoval, an aspiring journalist from Southern California. &#8220;I always looked forward to our meetings and lectures, and I always left every meeting feeling inspired and energized.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The curriculum included getting one-on-one mentoring and hands-on experience in producing stories from concept to execution focused on social justice, determinants of health, and community empowerment.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guest speakers also shared insights on networking with a purpose, strategies in managing one\u2019s career, and the experience of often being the only person of color in the newsroom.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n<p
